Crew Shortage Scuttles Weekend Crossings

The Steamship Authority got off to a rocky start this weekend after the reservation office in Mashpee lost power in a storm and several runs on the Vineyard Route were canceled.

Continued crew shortages at the Steamship Authority led to ferry cancellations throughout the weekend.

The boat line Saturday morning canceled eight trips aboard the M/V Woods Hole due to a lack of available crew members. Steamship spokesperson Sean Driscoll said the shutdown was due to a crew member who could not be replaced.

The Steamship Authority was able to accommodate customers who were waiting Saturday to travel on the Woods Hole route by running vessels later in the day. But that led to a skewing of the schedule on Sunday to make sure that deck officers got the mandatory rest required by the U.S. Coast Guard.

On Sunday, the Steamship Authority ended up canceling trips on the Island Home and the Martha’s Vineyard, to get the vessels back on schedule due to delayed boardings.

“Without this step, trips would need to be canceled today or tomorrow morning due to crew hour limits and needed rest periods,” the Steamship Authority wrote to customers Sunday morning. “Canceling this trip now will afford our staff more opportunities to accommodate customers this afternoon.”

The Steamship Authority has struggled in recent months to keep boats manned and even made schedule cuts in an attempt to reduce the number of unexpected cancellations. But deck officers have said that staffing is running on razor thin margins, meaning a single worker calling out sick can sideline ferries.

To add to the woes over the weekend, the Steamship Authority’s reservation office in Mashpee was without power for some of Saturday morning due to a storm on the mainland. Power was restored before noon.

The director said that this could happen. That is not an excuse for the debacle. He knew and he did nothing.

WHY is the SSA spending millions of dollars on new boats when the can't staff the ones they have

Kim OB

This is a complete joke! I waited in VH for over 6 hours. I had a reservation but the boat was cancelled because of staff issues. What is wrong?? Why are they buying more boats building a ridiculous building in WH? Who is running the show??

SF OB

I think the better question is why they’re spending so much on the new terminal and not investing that money elsewhere (preventive maintenance; recruiting …)

Kelly Vineyard Haven

Because the older boats are breaking down? SSA leadership should be able to walk and chew gum. Staffing and boat maintenance/replacement is a standard requirement at most well run ferry operations around the world.

You can't hire career focus specialized employees if they can't afford to live in the area and compete with $5000 weekly rentals. Who in there right mind wants to give up having a family and a home for the SSA? Who wants to deal with the commute through the bridge construction and traffic when there are opportunities that likely pay more closer to home?

This is a sign of what's to come. It's only gonna get worse.

Had a reservation Saturday. Waited 6 hours for boat!
Ok, I get unforeseen problems now and again. This is happening on the busiest day of the year?? What??
Also, there is no answers on how to deal with it except apologies.
Yet, we continue to buy used old boats that cost millions of dollars to rebuild and we are building new facility in VH??

Mass Maritime is 20 miles from Woods Hole. I'm no rocket scientist. But wouldn't it makes sense for the SSA to sponsor a senior or two a year with a scholarship to attend that academy? To build a pipeline of home grown maritime leaders from Island and Cape towns? With summer internships during the busy season mentoring under experienced captains? The military branches have ROTC to develop future leaders. Why does the SSA fail to develop future leaders? Is GM Davis just focused on accepting the status quo?
