Iggy's Bakery Looks to Take Over The Bite

Cambridge-based Iggy’s Bakery is looking to take over management of The Bite restaurant in Menemsha this summer.

Cambridge-based Iggy’s Bakery is looking to take over management of The Bite restaurant in Menemsha this summer.

The potential new bakery would be the first time the building would be open to the public since The Bite closed its doors for renovations after the summer of 2017.

Iggy’s Bakery still needs to finalize its lease with the building’s owners, Sarah and Bob Nixon, and get final permission from the town board of health

“If that happens, and all plans go forward then...we would essentially move in and try to get our act in gear for the season,” said Iggy’s manager Nick Zappia.

Iggy’s currently operates on the Vineyard during the summer at its Edgartown location on South Summer street. Mr. Zappia said the organization plans to continue running the Edgartown operation, now in its fourth year. They were inspired to expand to Chilmark, he said, after a successful pop-up shop at the Menemsha Texaco last summer.

“The level of excitement that we felt last year when we did the pop up at Texaco was just crazy,” Mr. Zappia said.

In addition to selling pastries and breads baked on the mainland, like those at their Edgartown shop, Mr. Zappia said they plan to expand their Menemsha offerings to include croissants baked on the premises and coffee.

The Chilmark board of health meets Wednesday to discuss the proposal.

Me Here

... With maybe a side of fried zucchini? And fried clams? Or oysters. I'm not picky.

Sorry. This will undoubtedly be wonderful. But man, I still really, really miss The Bite.

Louise Olson Chilmark and Cambridge MA

Iggy's bakery is in Cambridge and their products are widely distributed in the area as well.
My friends and family love the quality of their food. We also miss the fact that the Bite has been closed
for so long now. This would be a great addition to the Menemsha Beach area, one of our favorite places
on MV. ❤️

Croissants and Cup of Chowder I'll take two of each. Love the Bite and looking forward to the new establishment.

That's the last thing we need in Menemsha. Who wants coffee and pastries when the sun is setting? Bring back fried clams and chowder. Is there not a local restauranteur that can take this over and restore some of the old glory?

Dana Nunes MV

Excuse my stating of the obvious, but the sun isn’t always setting in Menemsha. That’s a very small part of it. Some of us are down there at 7AM, and a donut with my name on it would really go down a treat. I’m also not averse to pastry with sunset, or ever! I wish them the best of luck.

I used to do repairs for Coca Cola and The Bite was one of my favorite stops. I loved the two sisters that owned it and I think they put in fake calls to fix the vending machines so I would come by and have some good conversations. I believe their names were Karen and Jackie. They were so sweet. The food was delicious too.

Linda vancour Katama

Yes Thomas Karen and Jackie were the bite girls. Let’s keep them two in our seafood memories. Thank you ladies for making it happen for us. We love you.

Menemsha is in for a real treat with Iggy's Bakery opening up. Definitely the best bread and baked goods on the island!

The bite is being replaced by a Cambridge-based bread bakery? This is an unnecessary edition to the quaint fishing village we love. I am really sad to hear that this is happening.

Mike B Upisland

Obviously a massive improvement over the empty over grown shack we have had for the last 5+ years. Those of us who live here are thrilled and welcome Iggy’s with open arms. Best bread on the island.

I do live “here”. And I’d actually say Grey Barn has the best bread. Also, the frozen baguettes from Black Sheep are wonderful.

I am personally not a fan of Ivgy’s. I won’t buy it at the store. I would however be singing a different tune if it was Seven Stars out of Providence.

Didn’t iffy have a store front in Edgartown? The bakery opened at 10 am (for breakfast items) because they would bring g their goods over on the ferry in the morning…. Perhaps I’ll be proved wrong. But right now, I’m not impressed.

Dana Nunes MV

Iggy occasionally brings his goods to Squid Row for the morning crowd to enjoy. My partner says he’s never had better. Why not a bakery in Menemsha? And, from Cambridge is as good as from anywhere else, especially as I didn’t see any islanders scrambling to get in there. What would you put there, more seafood?
And, I believe you mean “addition.”

So this is basically going to be a vending booth for baked goods from off island . Well I avoid Menemsha at sunset already and now I have no excuse to come for takeout fried clams . I wish them luck and I'm sure they'll do well with the never ending supply of tourists .

What Iggy's may do is bring sweet love and connection to an already blissful part of the planet. Seems like a win to me.

I like what I read. I can’t wait to get back on the island and enjoy some pastries in Menemsha.

Welcome to Menemsha! Last years pop ups were such a treat. Some of us live here and don’t just come for sunset when we have to fight to get into Menemsha. Hope you are up and running soon. This Town deserves a treat. We lost the Menemsha Market and the Menemsha Deli. Let’s give the locals something to enjoy!

The best wings I’ve ever eaten. The Calamari was to die for. Add a star for eating them on Squid Row. Miss it terribly.
