After scuttling the New York City to Martha’s Vineyard ferry in 2023, Seastreak is bringing the summer service back this year.
The four and a half hour trip from East 35th street in Manhattan to Oak Bluffs will resume Memorial Day Weekend and run for eight weekends throughout the summer, the company said Monday.
After running for about 10 years, the voyage was put on ice because of low passenger counts and changing office habits in New York. Where people would once grab the boat after a Friday afternoon of work in the past, Seastreak vice president James D. Barker said more flexible work schedules had people traveling at different times.
In response, Seastreak will now leave New York at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and is scheduled to arrive in Oak Bluffs at 6 p.m.
“You’ll be able to go have dinner and have a full Friday evening,” Mr. Barker said. “We think it is a better way to do it.”
The ferry leaves for New York on Sundays at 3 p.m.
Mr. Barker also said that the ferry, which goes on to Nantucket after the Oak Bluffs stop, will have satellite internet this year. In the past, there was an approximately two-hour block where the internet wasn’t accessible.
