Island Mourns Death of Beloved Teacher

Shannon Gregory Carbon, teacher, Vineyarder and beloved member of the Island community, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 10. She was 53.

Shannon Gregory Carbon, teacher, Vineyarder and beloved member of the Island community, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 10. She was 53.

For the past decade, Ms. Carbon taught English as a Second Language at the Tisbury school, specializing in Portuguese.

“I remember it so vividly, when she started in September of 2012,” Tisbury school principal John Custer said. “She had an innate passion for supporting kids and families who needed support, who were adjusting to a new school, a new country, a new language. It was beautiful to witness.”

On Wednesday, the regional high school held a grief counseling service led by the Riverside Trauma Center based in Dedham. The service was attended by over 160 people, said school adjustment counselor Amy Lilavois.

“It was called How to Talk to Kids About Sudden Death and Traumatic Events,” Ms. Lilavois said, describing the Zoom event as a supportive place for the community to share.

“Riverside will be on the Island next week for in-person individual counseling, and creating coping groups for different subsets — for parents, students, friends, the Tisbury school community,” she said.

The guidance team at the school has been meeting with students throughout the week and Ms. Lilavois urged any parents who are worried about their children to contact the school counselors.

Mr. Custer said the Tisbury school has also been providing grief counseling to the entire school community.

Ms. Carbon grew up on the Vineyard, graduating from the high school in 1987 and Connecticut College in 1991. She earned a master’s degree in education administration from UMass Lowell in 2011.

After college she immediately embarked on what would be a long and successful teaching career. She got her start by joining Teach for America, a nonprofit organization that trains teachers and places them in low-income communities throughout the country.

Ms. Carbon taught in Los Angeles, New York City, Baton Rouge, La. and Portugal where she learned Portuguese. She returned to the Island in 2010 to raise her family and not long after began teaching at the Tisbury School.

“There is a profound sadness throughout the community,” Mr. Custer said. “She loved what she did and in return was loved by all, her students, her colleagues, everyone.”

There will be a private family burial, with a larger community service announced at a later date.

Shannon was a rare and special person, much like her Dad, Pat Gregory.

Unbelievable loss for the island community. I graduated with Shannon in 1987 and remember how nice and genuine she was every time we spoke. A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of having a wonderful “catch up” conversation with her while I serviced a tank at her home. She was still the same warm, wonderful person that I remembered from high school. She will be greatly missed by many.

I knew and loved Shannon’s mom and dad, as so many of us did. They were kind, gentle, loving and supportive people who always had an ear to listen and a hug to offer. When I met Shannon, a fellow mom at the West Tisbury school, she struck me as such a beautiful blend of both of her parents. Losing Pat was a huge blow to this small close knit community. And then Dorothy, in her quiet way, left us not long ago. To now lose Shannon so suddenly and tragically is a devastating loss which is emanating across this community in palpable waves of sadness. Her children, like Shannon and their grandparents, are remarkable and similarly beloved members of this island family. Holding onto them now, and giving back the love their grandparents and mom shared so fully and genuinely with all of us is a loving tribute to this beloved grief stricken family, one that this incredible community has the capacity to offer. To have lost these cherished island treasures delivers a sadness so deep and heavy, that we can only move forward with open hearts and warm embraces and persevere together to continue on without them.

Thank you Amy for your loving description of this very special family. The waves of sadness are far reaching as we in northern New York feel so so far away. We too are thankful for the times our lives allowed us with Pat and Dorothy and their beautiful Shannon.

Amy, You said this perfectly. Shannon will be missed, a terrible loss for this community. Time has not healed the void of the passing of Pat & Dorothy. Shannon will never be forgotten and will always be loved. ❤️Es

I can’t believe she’s gone! A wonderful friend, classmate and person from a great family! Far too young! Far too gifted to have been removed from us! We will miss her always!!!

I will miss Shannon very much. She was a good Mother to my Grandchildren, she was always kind to me. We had lots of fun over silly things. But will treasure forever. Always jumped in when I needed to go to Boston for Medical reasons. Was there with me when I lost my husband. She was a great daughter-in-law. She will be sadly missed. But I firmly believer the world was a better place for her time here.

Beautifully said my dear friend Ginny. Shannon was a beautiful soul who gave from her heart and was loved by everyone that knew her. God bless her family with love strength and peace.

I didn't know Shannon but knew her father Pat and brother Tim, both of whom were/are fantastic people. The Gregorys were an important part of my Vineyard introduction--the kind of family that makes this island so warm and special--and I will be praying for all of them.

I met Shannon in Porto when she was living here. She was a very special human being, extremely kind, funny and a good friend. I was so chocked about her death. Will miss her.
