Bravo Premiers New Vineyard-Based Reality Show

Paying homage to the Vineyard’s history as an African American vacation hub, the new season follows 12 young Black professionals as they navigate relationships in their palatial Oak Bluffs rental.

A new Bravo reality show set on Martha’s Vineyard premiered earlier this month.

Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard is the latest installment of Bravo’s Summer House reality series that originated in Montauk, New York. Paying homage to the Vineyard’s history as an African American vacation hub, the new season follows 12 young Black professionals as they navigate relationships in their palatial Oak Bluffs rental.

“[T]he friends have known one another for years and are excited to let loose this summer, indulging in cultural experiences and exclusive Island activities while learning to overcome their personal obstacles,” the show’s website states.

Three episodes have aired so far.

This isn’t the first reality TV show to drop anchor at the Vineyard. In 2013, ABC Family released The Vineyard, an eight-episode series following 10 twenty-somethings working and living together on the Island.

Some locals have already taken umbrage with the premise of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard since the first teaser dropped several months ago, making their feelings known in the Facebook group Islanders Talk. A post critiquing the show after its premiere garnered about 200 comments and counting.

The first episode, titled Not Your Mama’s Vineyard, premiered May 7. Episodes will air Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on the Bravo network.

Hershey Shores. Amos N' Annie. A true and complete insult to our Island and visiting persons of color that I and our family completely resent. And the 19,900 (mostly black) member Inkwell page on Facebook almost unanimously criticized this blatant garbage.

seriously? MV

12 people in a single family rental? I do believe in edg the by-law is no more than 4 unrelated people no matter how many bedrooms. This is to prevent an overload of the septic system, which has a designed flow per bedroom per day. A 3 bedroom home cannot accommodate 12 people without destroying the septic system, and polluting our sole source aquifer. How many bedrooms in this house?

Rational Person Oak Bluffs

You just need to watch the trailer to understand this is as far from Vineyard reality as could be. Shameful show.

John E. NYC/summer renter

The complaints that the show doesn't capture the authentic Vineyard experience are a bit beside the point, since it's a reality show -- reality shows and actual reality are unacquainted. At least it's a million miles better than the unfortunate adaptation of Our Kind of People, which posited a Vineyard with uniformed servants, corporate headquarters -- and traffic lights.

Oak Bluffs Grandma Oak Bluffs

But how many of us have been asked about this program! Filmed in September of last year so that they could get in a camera crew in many of these tight locations. Four of the five women have been Playboy bunnies which I didn't think existed anymore, and four of the guys have a loose fraternity connection, but otherwise it seems like they are just cast members and meeting for the first time. Cheap reality TV set in a notable locale in an off-season rental.
