Tisbury School Construction Set to Begin

Contractors are moving in for the two-year, $53 million renovation and addition at the Tisbury School.

Contractors are moving in for the two-year, $53 million renovation and addition at the Tisbury School, with construction trailers installed on town-owned land at 55 West William street.

More equipment will be arriving next week, as crews begin to prepare the campus for the installation of a temporary school east of the original building.

“We’re in the process of mobilizing on the site,” said Harvey Eskenas, senior project manager for WT Rich of Newton, Tisbury’s construction manager at risk for the project, during a joint meeting Wednesday of the town select board, school committee and school building committee.

While school is still in session, “blackout periods” will be imposed on deliveries of equipment and materials to the campus, said Evan Moore, another senior project manager at WT Rich.

Once the ground is prepared, the temporary school will be barged to the Vineyard in modular sections and trucked to the school grounds for assembly, Mr. Eskenas said.

“You stitch them together to make one building,” Mr. Eskenas said.

“It’s not like you get this massive building trying to truck up the street and knocking everyone’s garden gnomes over.”

Demolition of the old gymnasium will also take place over the summer, but not until a thorough asbestos abatement process has been completed, Mr. Moore told the town officials.

Full construction at the old school will begin this fall, the project managers said, and is expected to conclude in the spring of 2024 with occupancy beginning at the start of the new school year that fall.

Coulda had a new school for way less with little disruption. Hard to feel sorry for Tisbury, but easy to feel sorry for the kids. Now we're going through the same thing with the high school and once again the wealthiest bluest towns in the state can't figure out (or doesn't want to) how to fairly pay for its school and what to do with its fields. And in the meantime the kids just wait, while wealthy adults dither. Redistribution is always fun and easy till suddenly you have to pay something. Then we get stingy, don't we?
