Stop and Shop Expansion Set to Begin

After years of delays in court, a long-planned expansion and renovation project at the Edgartown Stop & Shop is back on track, spokesmen for the grocery chain confirmed Thursday.

After years of delays in court, a long-planned expansion and renovation project at the Edgartown Stop & Shop is back on track, spokesmen for the grocery chain confirmed Thursday.

“We can confirm that we plan to move forward with the expansion of our Edgartown store location and hope to begin construction later this year,” communications spokesman Jennifer Brogan told the Gazette in an email.

Geoghan Coogan, a Vineyard Haven attorney who has served as local counsel for Stop & Shop, concurred. A building permit application has been filed, according to Mr. Coogan, pending signoff from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission land use planning committee on a construction management plan.

“I believe they expect to start some site work before the summer, but most likely looking at the fall to begin construction,” Mr. Coogan said in an email.

The major expansion and renovation project will overhaul the busy Upper Main street store by adding 16,000 square feet of space to the existing 25,000-square-foot grocery store. Relocation of a drive-through bank on the property, additional parking spaces and a complete redesign of the store’s parking lot are also planned, among other things.

The last major expansion of the store was in 1989.

On the drawing board for years, the project was approved by the MVC in 2018 and subsequently approved at the local level by the Edgartown planning board.

But plans were stalled when Edgartown attorney Benjamin Hall Jr., whose family owns property abutting the store, began filing a series of appeals in the Massachusetts Land Court. Mr. Hall alleged a variety of technical and substantive problems in the way the permit process was handled.

The appeals took numerous twists and turns, with hearings, claims, counter claims and a mountain of pleadings. In the end Stop & Shop prevailed on every count.

This past July a state appeals court judge upheld an earlier dismissal of claims in the land court, extinguishing all further avenues of appeal for Mr. Hall.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated civil action this week, a personal injury lawsuit was filed against Stop & Shop in Dukes County superior court by a California resident who claimed she was injured after tripping and falling on the “poorly lit and poorly placed concrete parking barrier” in the parking lot of the Edgartown store.

Represented by attorneys at Morgan & Morgan in Boston, Vicki Eklund, a resident of Marin County, is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages for alleged negligence and carelessness, according to the complaint.

The alleged incident occurred in October 2020.

Good timing on this article as many of us were just talking about when this was going to start. Good thing the California resident is not using Mr. Hall in her suit as his track record on winning cases is not very good. Lets hope the new S & S does not have anymore of those self checkout lines as the new ones are the worse.

When one uses a self service check out, one is usually taking work away from some poor soul who needs it. Using the self service check out: might possibly save you some time, clearly saves money for the store, and is hardly ever beneficial for the workers. In fact, it may cost someone a job.

Kenny OB

Jim - Have you seen the ads on TV where Stop&Shop is trying to hire? No one's job is being taken away. If you'd like to apply I'm sure they'd hire you as a bagger or cashier.

Jamie Alley Norwood

I work at a supermarket, and our self-checkout lanes are in place because there is a shortage of employees. There are jobs available, but folks either can't or don't want to work. Great job for teenagers to learn some real life/real world and dealing with people skills, but they don't want jobs either. Considering the situation the country is in, it's just kind of sad and disappointing, for a start.

David Edgartown

Pretty safe bet that those self-checkout lanes are here to stay, and they’ll probably put in more. Now if only they could have a dedicated person to attend to the calls for help.

R Scott Patterson Edgartown

Self check out lines are there for one reason and one reason only and it has nothing to do with a worker shortage. Self check out isles are there to reduce the workforce and lower costs! There is no other reason and I will never ever use one. If SS wants me to do a checkers job then SS should pay me to do so, perhaps a 20% discount off the top?

Jamie Alley Norwood

I can tell you with complete confidence that the reason we have self-checkout stations at the store I work at is because there is no one applying for jobs. And my store has great benefits for full-time employees, a discount card for all employees, and very flexible scheduling. Perhaps it's different at S&S on the island.

Jenn Oak Bluffs

R Scott - I'm a cashier. I'm grateful to those who use self service and take the pressure off of us. My job is thankless and many customers are in a a constant bad mood. It's demoralizing to look up and see the line grow and grow. There is a shortage of workers, despite what you say. I live it every shift. Even as an employee I don't get a 20% discount. Be kind.

I've mastered the self scanners at the S&S in Edgartown. I don't know if the off Island scanners are better, but the ones here are fine.

Go check out the cat food section. I order mine from Chewy because it got so bad. I know there is a nationwide pet food shortage right now but the issue has been going on for over 4 years in the Edgartown store. I’m hoping for better things with the expansion.

Bob Edgartown

First I am glad I am not in there every single day but am there more than I want. Second I think someone needs an eye check up. And if I could post photos to this site from my trip today you would see plenty of empty shelf space. The employees in the store do the best they can and always helpful.

Thank you Stop&Shop for persevering despite being treated poorly by some Islander’s. Hopefully this gets off the ground and encourages redevelopment of the VH store. The VH store is such an eyesore and it feels and smells like something from the 1950’s. I always feel bad for the workers in that building, and they have served the Island well through Covid. I hope Stop&Shop will be encouraged to ramp up their VH effort and bring that store into the 21st Century.

Patricia Popple Holden

The Vineyard Haven store is just too small. Narrow isles make it hard to pop in and out, and I bet lots of people choose the Edgartown store instead.

the renovated store in Edgartown is going to be a nightmare during the season which gets longer every year. Eminent domain should have been used to move it out to Barnes Rd, centrally located to a lot more people and closed the VH store. Those wonderful thoughtful island leaders, the Cronigs screwed that renovation up-I try never to shop there.

Marie Edgartown

I agree. Wrong location. The traffic from vineyard haven road and also Katama will be a nightmare. Be careful what you wish for..

Stop & Shop n VH is in a deplorable state because the Powers that be in VH won’t let them do anything just as they wanted to keep the old Steamship Authority building in the 80’s. People in charge in VH are not serving their people, seasonal residents, or visitors to the Island of Martha’s Vineyard! It’s sad and so necessary! Stop & Shop wants to improve the PARKING & SHOPPING experience for the shopper in VH. Do any these people who vote shop for large quantities of groceries. VH loses because shoppers will just go to Edgartown!

L Diddy ROCKVILLE

You are absolutely correct! S&S wanted to renovate and expand some time ago and was thwarted. Efficiency would be better served and unused space in VH would better be utilized.

Stop and shop could eliminate the auto checkouts and give a few more people a job. They make a fortune here on food, things are 50% more than off the island.

Jenn Oak Bluffs

Charlie when were you on the island last? Every business is trying to hire help, including Stop & Shop. I have friends who used to work here and left for the Falmouth store, or just left the island. I don't have the luxury of living in Boston and Edgartown like you. I make $22/hr and can barely pay rent and make ends meet on this island. More of my friends are planning to leave because renting year round is impossible now. Get used to self checkout and shorter hours.

Jason OB

So Charlie, are you saying S&S costs are the same off island as on island? You have the luxury of shopping in South Boston and bringing food to your other home in Edgartown. I think S&S has been a great neighbor, and far cheaper than other grocery options on this island.

Not really. Many of us in Edgartown go to VH because they have things that the Edgartown store doesnt.

To those who decry self checkout lines— do you always go into the bank when you need cash? Do you patronize only gas stations where someone pumps your gas? These are not good jobs. Moreover, they are not jobs that pay enough for you to live on the Island.

Please make the parking spots wider. Kinda ridiculous to expect that the cars will be smaller than they actually are. ‘Preciate the hope but maybe the parking lots at cronigs with the solar and the chargers might be a better idea?
