MVC Appointment Opens Up in Oak Bluffs

After a year serving on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Oak Bluffs select board member Brian Packish said Tuesday he would not seek reappointment.

After a year serving on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Oak Bluffs select board member Brian Packish said at a meeting Tuesday he would not seek reappointment to the MVC.

Mr. Packish cited an unmanageable workload between his duties as a select board member and commissioner, noting he often missed meetings due to scheduling conflicts between the two bodies.

“I don’t think I can responsibly be on the board of selectmen and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission,” he said.

The board decided to advertise the position in an effort to get more qualified people involved in local government. Those interested can email [email protected].

“I think that the person should reflect the feelings of the board and not their own agenda,” select board member Gail Barmakian said. She said if no qualified candidates present themselves, she would be willing to serve on the commission. Ms. Barmakian served on the MVC prior to Mr. Packish.

The select board plans to make the appointment at its Jan. 11 meeting.

Sorry to see Mr. Packish go he was one of the few voices of reason and lived in the real world and not some utopia dream.

More Gail In OB?

“I think that the person should reflect the feelings of the board and not their own agenda,” select board member Gail Barmakian said. She said if no qualified candidates present themselves, she would be willing to serve on the commission. Ms. Barmakian served on the MVC prior to Mr. Packish.

What Gail means is they should mostly reflect her opinions so she doesn’t have to devote the time. Absent that, she is willing to make the time. Should we really have Barmakian on the selectboard, wastewater commission (chair, I believe), and MVC?

She needs to limit her involvement.

In response to Ms Barmakian's comment, I believe that the MVC appointee should represent all the citizens of Oak Bluffs and not just the Board of Selectmen.

Reflect the feelings of the tax paying community seems more logical than “ the board “ . Rubber stamp is the plague we hope to avert. Commitment to progress, economic vitality with a sense of vision to anticipate actual needs . Ripping up
Circuit avenue for one parking spot is quite a brilliant example.

Thanks to Brian Packish for honorably representing Oak Bluffs on the MVC during this past term. The selectmen have big shoes to fill when finding his replacement.
