Land Bank Protects Fields at Bliss Pond Farm

Open fields at Bliss Pond Farm in Chilmark will be permanently protected following a conservation purchase by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank this week. The land bank announced Wednesday that it had paid $1.46 million for the restriction on the 34-acre field. The seller is Juliana Flanders.

The well-known 61-acre property is situated at the intersection of the Menemsha Crossroad and the North Road.

“The restriction guarantees that . . . the 34-acre field will remain permanently open and grassy,” the land bank said in an announcement on its Facebook page Wednesday. It also said: “Conservation of farm fields, particularly those located along or visible from public roads, has long been a top land bank goal. Bliss Pond Farm was identified by the Chilmark land bank board as a priority at its very first meeting in June of 1986.”

The Chilmark selectmen voted to allow the conservation restriction at a meeting earlier this summer.

Nice to see just keep in mind 34 more acres of land that can not be used for housing of any kind and off the tax rolls for ever. You need not wonder why land prices keep going up as less and less of the island is available.

Sorry "Bob" but you either obtuse or misinformed. Not only are you obviously uninformed about "the cost of community services" which is what drives up the tax rate but the Flanders family has only sold a conservation restriction so they still own the land AND pay taxes albeit at a reduced rate. If you are familiar with the property you will be aware that it is land that is unsuitable (wetlands ponds etc.) for development. We don't need more houses, and particularly not for the high end houses (the jet set hedge funders) we need an economy which allows islanders to continue to live here comfortably on a realistic income and at a realistic cost of living!

Thanks Juliana and family for preserving a much loved AND enjoyed vista and thanks to the Land bank for recognizing that this was a crucial purchase.

Great news! The land bank plays such an important role in the preservation of our fragile island.

Agree with Mark. More necessary now than ever as our infrastructure is fragile.
