State police are investigating a broadside, two-vehicle collision that occurred on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road involving an Edgartown paramedic vehicle that was responding to an emergency service call Sunday.

A 47-year-old Edgartown woman is facing motor vehicle citations, including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and obstructing an emergency vehicle, according to state police spokesman David Procopio.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported first to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital before being airlifted to a hospital in Boston.

The driver of the Edgartown paramedic vehicle, a 23-year-old Vineyard Haven man, was transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with minor injuries.

“The paramedic was discharged from MV Hospital later in the day,” Mr. Procopio said.

The crash investigation remains ongoing, according to Mr. Procopio.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of Vineyard Meadows Farm Road on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road, according to West Tisbury police Sgt. Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd. Both West Tisbury and Edgartown emergency service personnel responded to the incident, which occurred in West Tisbury.

A state police trooper from the Oak Bluffs barracks also responded to the scene, Mr. Procopio said.

In a followup statement from state police Monday, Mr. Procopio said that the paramedic vehicle, a 2016 Chevy pickup truck, was responding to Chilmark with “lights and sirens on” for an emergency call when the collision occurred with a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe.

“Other vehicles pulled out of the way to allow it to pass as required by law, but the operator of the Santa Fe pulled out and attempted to cut in front of the oncoming emergency vehicle, we think to take a turn,” Mr. Procopio wrote. “The pickup truck hit the SUV broadside.”

The SUV operator was found to not have a valid license, and has received multiple motor vehicle citations. Mr. Procopio did not immediately provide the name of the driver.

The incident stopped traffic on the busy cross-Island throughway as state police conducted their investigation, with Chilmark police assisting in traffic control.

According to Mr. Procopio, the scene was cleared by 3 p.m. Sunday.

If she was unlicensed I have to ask if she was uninsured. If she was uninsured who pays for this? Surely not the insurance of the town or the tax payers.

The woman must have been in a rush to get to where she was going. Pulling out in front of oncoming traffic is a common occurrence these days. Hope she will be ok.

It amazes me though how the name of 'Vineyard Meadow Farms Road' was wrong when they put the street sign up and not corrected - several years later still being referred to as Vineyard Meadows Farm Road, Its Farms.

Mike,
You’ve probably noticed that the town sign at the other entrance to the road is also wrong—but in a different way. It reads Vineyard Meadow Farm Road.
No plurals. At least the rock got it right.

You don't think the police want to add more patrols? Where do you think the extra police will come from? You can't quadruple the police force for 2 months.

Not that I want to live in a "police" state but MV could @ least be more proactive in enforcing established speed limits.. I drive an antique vehicle & can't go over 40. but many drivers behind me insist by tailing me I will speed up. Not doable .. But for a thought maybe limit Truck & Trailer sizes for the summer .. The huge trucks just don't fit on Island roads..
