In a significant shift, Island boards of health have issued a mask advisory for indoor public spaces on the Vineyard, regardless of vaccination status, as case numbers rise and the contagious Delta variant continues to spread on the Island.
The indoor mask advisory was issued in a press release from Tisbury health agent Maura Valley Wednesday afternoon, and follows new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control that masks should be worn in crowded indoor spaces.
“In accordance with the most recent CDC guidance and the fact that Dukes County is considered to be at substantial risk for COVID transmission, the Island boards of health strongly advise that individuals wear masks when indoors or in enclosed spaces serving the public or when unable to maintain social distance, regardless of vaccination status,” the release said.
Speaking to the Gazette by phone, Ms. Valley said the recommendation from the boards of health is just that: a recommendation.
“Really, it’s an advisory,” Ms. Valley said. “We’re basically strongly recommending, but it’s stopped short of a mandate.”
The announcement comes after health agents have reported more than 20 new Covid-19 cases in the past two weeks, with at least 12 of them breakthrough cases among fully-vaccinated individuals.
After sending test samples to the state epidemiology lab for sequencing, the Delta variant has also been identified in at least four positive Covid-19 individuals on the Island. According to the Island health agents, the variant is far more transmissible and leads to an infection and symptoms much more quickly than the original virus.
In the release, health agents said that although fully-vaccinated individuals are at a much lower risk of infection, illness, hospitalization and even death, they can still be infected and not know it, as well as transmit the virus.
Ms. Valley said that while the advisory could apply to restaurants and public office spaces, the guidance was focused mainly on indoor retail spaces, particularly in crowded downtown and Main street business districts on the Island.
“It’s more for stores,” Ms. Valley said. “You walk into stores, and you see a lot of customers and staff walking around without masks. We’re saying, with the Delta variant, and the uptick in cases, we’re strongly advising that you wear a mask.”
She emphasized that the guidance was for public, rather than private, indoor spaces.
“We’re not saying wear masks when you’re in your house,” Ms. Valley added.
According to Ms. Valley, Provincetown, which has seen case numbers balloon to more than 800 after a cluster was identified in the town last weekend, is currently the only municipality in the state with a mask mandate.
The press release also included five pieces of advice for Islanders based on CDC guidance and current public health standards, which follow:
• Please get vaccinated.
• Give careful thought to entering crowded indoor space if an alternate time might be less crowded.
• Enjoy as many of your activities as you can outdoors and ventilate indoor space shared with non-household members as much as possible.
• Get tested If you believe you’ve been exposed and stay home if you are not feeling well.
• If you are fully vaccinated, consider not mixing with un-vaccinated friends or family indoors.

How is it that electric
JayEff EdgatownHow is it that electric service worker is required to wear a helmet, proper gloves, a yellow vest and a harness when in the bucket, but says it's a free country and can choose not to get vaccinated? Do these people realize this is a serious national health emergency and their stubbornness (or stupidity) is causing people to die and extending the life of this horrible virus? This isn't political; it's common sense. To anti-vaxxers: please get the shot.
Appreciate JayEff’s

Imagine traveling to a country that requires a vaccination for Yellow Fever, or Malaria tablets-and attempting to announce you’re not having it. Guess what ducky, you’re U-turned back to your country of origin, no questions asked.
Help the herd, which is weak from everyone’s stab at individuality…when it comes to the vaccine-get the jab so we can emerge stronger.
Just because people don’t
Micheal LiterusJust because people don’t want to get the covid vaccine doesn’t mean they’re anti vaxxer

Um. That’s exactly what it
SallyUm. That’s exactly what it means. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, you are anti- that vaccine. Doesn’t matter if you get a flu shot or have your kids vaccinated against a whole slew of childhood diseases. If you don’t get a covid vax, you’re anti-vax in the only way that matters.

Great! If only more with your
Annoyed Islander MVGreat! If only more with your mindset would stay away and keep your germs to yourselves, maybe we wouldn’t be in the position of having to reinstate mask orders and again be fearful because some are too ignorant and selfish to get vaccinated, mask up, and think of the greater good instead of just themselves and their “freedoms”.

When the risk of getting
D. Vinyard HavenWhen the risk of getting struck by lightening or killed in an auto accident are hundreds of times more likely than having an adverse effect from the vaccine or even the effects of contracting Covid. We are letting the fear of something we can easily deal with rule our world. High risk and the elderly should take precautions. If you are young and healthy there are much bigger risks to worry about. How about accepting everyone and treating all with respect.
When I was on the island over
Michaela New Haven, CTWhen I was on the island over the Fourth of July, I was surprised at the lack of mask wearing compared to our hometown in CT. We have children who are too young to be vaccinated. Therefore, we all wore masks indoors and outside when in close proximity to others. We were often the only ones masked, especially outdoors. I hope the new guidelines are widely adopted and enforced. We were looking forward to coming in August, but are now having second thoughts.
If my children were too young
MarieIf my children were too young to be vaccinated I would have them mask up too. My family is vaccinated and pose no threat, it’s the unvaccinated that you need protection from.
Your comment is factually
MichaelaYour comment is factually incorrect. There is ample data (from the Provincetown outbreak, for example) that vaccinated people can be infected and transmit the delta variant. I am a physician and know several fully vaccinated colleagues who are infected and symptomatic. Please educate yourself and care enough to protect others.
Careful. Even though getting
Margaret ColoradoCareful. Even though getting vaccinated is the right thing to do ... the JURY is STILL out on whether or not you are TOTALLY protected by Vaccination. Maybe do a little more research on that one especially if you have children or are around ‘at risk’ people.
