A mainstay Martha’s Vineyard nightspot year round, the Ritz Cafe will shutter effective Jan. 1, with plans to reopen March 9, following approval from the Oak Bluffs selectmen Tuesday.
As a mainstay Martha’s Vineyard nightspot with a year-round liquor license, the Ritz Cafe usually waits until late winter to close its doors for a few weeks of annual maintenance.
But following Tuesday’s approval from the Oak Bluffs board of selectmen, owner Larkin Stallings will be permitted to shutter his Circuit avenue establishment Jan. 1, with plans to reopen March 9.
“We started losing money a couple months ago. We certainly have enough to get through if we couldn’t close but I’d rather spend it on paint, the floors and other stuff like that,” Mr. Stallings said.
Mr. Stallings told the board he is down to two year-round employees at the Ritz. “We are currently losing staff to Florida in droves,” he said.
Employees who have temporarily relocated to Florida have made commitments to him that they will return by the end of March, Mr. Stallings said.
This is the second time in recent weeks that Oak Bluffs selectmen have allowed a restaurant with a year-round license to close during the winter. Last month, the board agreed to put the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company’s liquor license on hold until spring after owner J.B. Blau said strict pandemic dining rules prevent him from doing business at his all-indoor eatery.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, selectmen appointed Joseph Sollitto as the Oak Bluffs representative to the Steamship Authority port council and Rizwan Malik as representative to the MV Cultural Council.

Mr. Packish recused himself
Llewelyn Probst MVMr. Packish recused himself (as an abutter) from the vote on the Ritz and there was widespread encouragement and understanding from all selectpeople regarding the closure of the Ritz for two months, but when Seaweed’s wants to drop down to one night a week Mr. Packish (as a more immediate abutter and competitor whose restaurant is closed) speaks freely on/against the subject, potentially influencing the decision of the other selectpeople, before recusing himself from the vote. Hmmm.
Seaweeds (seasonal license)
Fact checking Oak bluffsSeaweeds (seasonal license) asked for reduction to four days and changed at the meeting to just Saturday in essence cherry picking the best night while the rest of us stay open all week. Seaweeds was also given the option to be granted their original ask and or close early. Ritz and Chowder company (year round licenses) two totally different scenarios.
We know, my comment was about
Llewelyn Probst MVWe know, my comment was about Mr. Packish's involvement as someone with a conflict of interest. I don't believe the type of licensure affects the dissimilarity in his involvement. He should neither speak nor vote on either issue when they pertain to the operation of any specific restaurant in Oak Bluffs, especially ones in such close proximity to his own.
Characterizing Seaweed's desire to be open one night a week during the current pandemic as "cherry-picking," especially when the Governor himself is encouraging people to stay home and there are many restrictions a restaurant has to follow that limit their capacity to generate revenue, is cruel. You speak as though the owners are trying to game the system to gain an advantage when, in reality, they are likely trying to do what they can to ensure they can survive these adverse economic conditions. Do you think they'd be asking to reduce hours if they were making money? To summarize, you have the governor of the state encouraging people to stay home and refrain from going out to eat (a recreational, non-essential activity) and then you have local officials forcing a restaurant to stay open and lose money in order to serve folks who really shouldn't be going indoors to eat anyway. The reason is it creates a 'slipper slope' or 'dangerous precedent' -- for what exactly?
The Gazette reported on 11/26
Local MVYThe Gazette reported on 11/26 that the owners of Seaweed’s were denied their request to move from five days to one day and have to remain open four days a week. Somebody needs to clarify on what basis these decisions are being determined. Seem very subjective, inconsistent and u fair. Perhaps even biased. As one member of the community the Selectman seem to be concerned about, I’d like the owners and employees of Seaweed’s to decide how they best manage their lives and business. If that means I don’t have Seaweed’s as a choice a few nights a week, I think I’ll make it. Ridiculously they might not and we won’t have the restaurant at all. Great governing folks.
These rules may make sense in
R Scott Patterson EdgartownThese rules may make sense in a normal year but make zero sense during a pandemic. Selectman need to get out of the way and let businesses decide for themselves how to survive in these extraordinary times.
Agreed. If (all) businesses
Darrell King EdgartownAgreed. If (all) businesses are to be closed in the interest of public health, that's understandable. But to use liquor license regulations as a determination of who should remain open when and for how long is wrong. The goal here should be to help all businesses who have suffered through this pandemic to survive to see another day (season), by whatever works for each individual business. They are all unique and should be able to determine for themselves what this entails. Let's have a little compassion and flexibility here. We all want to return to 'normal' as soon as possible, and that means having our favorite spots to visit.
I vehemently agree with all
Michael Hardy OB in seasonI vehemently agree with all these posts.
Allow this new restaurant the ability to survive.
Purchasing food for diners for one night a week is ludicrous.
Can you imagine the waste.
PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS DECISION.
