Vineyard Photographer Peter Simon Dies at 71

Peter Simon, the iconic Martha’s Vineyard photographer whose pictures of people both famous and ordinary, political protests, rock concerts and Island landscapes spanned more than half a century, died Sunday night at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

He was 71 and had been battling lung cancer for some time.

Beginning in the 1960s and running until the time of his death, his prolific photographic career included rock and roll portraits, the civil rights era, hippie heyday, sports, Jamaica and its reggae stars. He had published numerous books, including On the Vineyard I, II and III, and a yearly calendar. His last book, To Everything There is a Season, was published in 2017 and was a retrospective of his life’s work with more than 700 photographs.

He was a reggae music aficionado and for many years hosted a weekly radio show on WMVY. He produced his own record labels, including the Vineyard Sound volumes that featured compilations of well-known singer-songwriters such as Richie Havens, Jonathan Edwards, Maynard Silva, Johnny Hoy, Susan Tedeschi and his sister Carly Simon.

A longtime year-round resident of Chilmark, Peter was a familiar and ubiquitous presence on the Island, where he would wander about with his camera, often barefoot in all but the coldest months of the year. Lucy Vincent Beach was a favorite summer haunt.

Peter began working for the Gazette in 1969, and over the next five decades contributed thousands of pictures to the weekly newspaper. He never tired of the thrill of having his picture on the front page or editorial page. He was a photojournalist first, and his broad record of work included all the traditional Vineyard events, from the Chilmark Road Race to annual town meetings.

Born in 1947, he grew up summering on the Vineyard and was the son and youngest child of Richard and Andrea Simon, progressives in their era who had a profound influence on him. His father was the founder of the publishing company Simon and Schuster, and was also was an amateur photographer who encouraged Peter’s work.

When Richard Simon died of a heart attack in 1960, Peter inherited his Leica camera.

He dedicated his last book to his father.

In an interview with the Gazette about the book, he said: “My father, before he died, said son, save every negative you’ve ever taken. So I did. I never throw anything out because I listened to him.”

He is survived by his wife Ronni Simon, their son Willie Simon and his sisters Carly, Lucy and Joanna Simon.

Arrangements are incomplete — a full obituary will follow.

Oh Payte. Always a big toothy smile, always a gift of pure soul.
I'm so happy for the time we had at the 50th this summer, and the 50 years before...your photographs of my children growing up are among my greatest joys. (including the raggedy blonde 4 year old and the ever-scruffy boy child!!) And your love of music and the vagaries of the weather are legend!
Rest in peace dear friend.

Such sad and unexpected news. I haven't seen Peter in over 30 years but recall fondly our stickball, rockball (on his spacious lawn), golf and card games (always hearts or "forn") For this to happen so close to Thanksgiving makes it easy to say that I am thankful to have known him. My condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Peter.

Peter introduced me to Reggae music and for this I will be eternally grateful. His radio broadcasts from WBRU as well as his dance parties at Lupo's in the winter and the Bon View Inn in the summertime were a wonderful way for a young college student to escape the realities of the real world. RIP Peter...yeah mon!

I first met Peter when I worked at Illuminations in Cambridge, MA in the late '70s/early '80s and then got to know him a little better when he had a semi-regular DJ gig spinning records at a reggae club in Manhattan--thanks for being such a nice man!

I'm so sorry to hear of Peter's passing. Although I haven't seen him in years, I remember fondly our stick ball, rock ball (a curb ball variation that he invented), golf and card games (hearts and "forn"). Also, I won't forget all the Mets games we attended where they fell short. Peter came from one talented, unique family and I send my condolences to them. I am thankful I knew him. Rest in Peace, Peter.

Peter was compassionate and kind, and he loved animals. I knew him through my work at the Vineyard Gazette in the '70s and '80s. He will always remain forever young in my mind. My condolences to Ronni and Willie.

Peter was one of the most wonderful persons we ever knew, and a part of him will always stay in our hearts. From our student days at Boston University up until our surprise visits at his store he always radiated the best of human nature. It was a privilege to share time with him.

So shocked and sorry to open up The BU alumni magazine and see that Peter died a few months ago. We were all part of a large extended antiwar.artistic, BU news,Boston Phoenix group. I ran into him in Golden Gate Park one day in the 70s, and he was leading a troop of people and looking so happy. He was such a nice person, and now he’s with the angels. peace, dear Peter.

Dear Shelley, Your comment is so in keeping with your warmth! I didn't know Peter (but my family subscribed to the Vineyard Gazette for decades, as we had a home that we've just sold in Gay Head/Aquinnah). But I do remember you fondly :) I doubt you remember me, but I joined Lillick as a summer clerk in 1979, and again after I graduated from B.U. Law School in 1980. I am from Rye NY originally so I recall the Rye/B.U. connection giving rise to conversation. I worked most with Mr. Staring - but with half the litigators at the firm. I didn't know Dennis well - he was in Labor as I recall - but Dave Culver from my class worked with him. However, I do remember you well - and so fondly - you'd bound from your desk, take just a few steps as you'd race down the hall bringing something you'd just typed or revised to someone. You were so charming, so gracious, so warm - that you caused much comment (all favorable) among the lawyers I knew there (Juliana Jensen, Marie Roehm, Skip Pfeiffer and others). I read the other day of Dennis's death - it stated it was in 1997, so I trust you've had time to grieve and return to your normal life - but I am very sorry for your loss. I hope it was a wonderful marriage. If you'd ever like to correspond, I'm at [email protected] - I live in New Jersey now and work for the NY City Law Department. Thanks for having been so charming - you brightened the day of so many at that firm. Yours, Tom Dean P.S. Time seems to go by so fast - and those we like just vanish! I heard last year about the death of dear Linda Spath (the librarian) and was so sad. So I resolved that when I came across someone from those very good years, I'd tell them I liked them -- why not?

My wife & I met Peter a few summers ago on the Vineyard at his shop. He was a beautiful man full of the spirit of rock & of photography. He signed everything we bought. He was full of peace and love. We are saddened by his loss.
