As a lifelong Islander, I am deeply upset by the verbal abuse with which some of my dearest family friends from New York, who happened to be here when the pandemic struck, have received simply because of their license plate. We have been co-quarantining with them, all strictly following the protocols and helping where we safely can. My friends own a home here, pay taxes and contribute to our local community. But, even all that aside, they are human beings, frightened as much as all the rest of us for their family, friends and themselves as well as for the rest of the world.
There is never an appropriate time for people to disrespect one another. And especially now, when we all are hoping and praying for a swift end to this global nightmare, is the time for us all to support one another, not to tear each other down. We are all in this together.

That’s the paradox. In the
MarieThat’s the paradox. In the summer we are encouraged to visit, spend money and go to fundraisers.
Yes, we are all in this
COH EdgartownYes, we are all in this together! I do not advocate anyone being unkind to anyone else. But missing in all the letters of unity is the acknowledgement that some people from all groups, from all states, full time residents and summer people behave badly. I have lived in DC, NYC, NJ, PA, MA and now live here full time. I do not like the vitriol either. But please don't make this us vs. them. Your geographical group should not define you; your ethical and personal behavior does. So instead of rising to the defense of "your group," why not move forward and encourage everyone to read the excellent opinion piece in this issue and to join in being part of the solution.
Maybe its time to stop
Mongmong1 VHMaybe its time to stop thinking like our economy is totally out of control toirist based one. Are our island governments so dysfunctional that they can't figure out a sustainable island plan where there are less vehicals, more citizen participation and stop building for the sake of the elusive dollar.
We can have a thriving economy here that is inclusive of year rounders, summer home people and those that want to come and stay in their homes during a pandemic. We can develop a pace that works and is inclusive to a point. With a plan in place it is ok say yes/no to what is good for our environment, our health and our lives.
I am a seasonal homeowner
fact checker edg nyc areaI am a seasonal homeowner/taxpayer for 40+ years. I have delayed opening up my house at mv until the stay at home things expire. When I do arrive by private aircraft, I'll be going to my property with sufficient food supplies so that I will not have to visit the stores. I'll be staying on my property and not setting foot in any public places. I won't be a 'burden' on the hospital. If I got sick i'd find my own way to get flown out of here. Just as many other seasonal residents, I just want to be left alone and not hear the nasty comments from the few loudmouths who like our money.
I completely agree. Seasonal
Ted Vineyard HavenI completely agree. Seasonal residents are a part time burden on island infrastructure, but pay a higher tax rate than full time residents. Most don't have children in the school system, spend money at local shops and restaurants, support local charities and interests and are now told that they are not wanted here. Be very careful what you wish for.
I will not be flying up but I
JMI will not be flying up but I plan to visit my home in the coming weeks. I will be bringing the food, wine/beer and entertainment for my family.
I may visit Stop n Shop to fill in with milk and produce. I have my mask ready to protect you and to protect me. It works both ways.
