With 10 applicants now vying to represent Martha’s Vineyard on the Steamship Authority board of governors, the Dukes County Commission is set to conduct candidate interviews Wednesday.
Jane Edmonds of Oak Bluffs and Jacqueline Noel of West Tisbury were the last to submit applications to the commission before the Friday deadline.
The county commission is the appointing authority for the Vineyard boat line governor.
Ms. Edmonds is vice-president for programming and community outreach for Babson College in Wellesley, and previously ran her own consulting business, according to her letter of interest. Ms. Noel’s application cites experience in the public transit industry, most recently as owner and public transit consultant for Hardwick Transit Associates of Vineyard Haven.
The two join a crowded field of Island candidates seeking to replace longtime SSA governor Marc Hanover, who steps down later this month after five terms on the board.
The other candidates include Clarence A. (Trip) Barnes 3rd, a retired trucker who serves on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission; Rob Lytle, an Oak Bluffs resident with experience as a digital project manager; Jim Malkin, a second-term Chilmark selectman and retired transportation executive; Michael Lyons of Oak Bluffs, a truck driver and 2008 graduate of the regional high school; Allen Carney of Aquinnah, a marketing and sales consultant, Elmer Vanderhoop of Aquinnah, a retired EMT and member of the Wampanoag tribe, and Angela Cywinski of Vineyard Haven, a former Aquinnah assessor.
Dukes County commissioner Leon Brathwaite of West Tisbury also submitted an application last week. His work experience includes director of training and staff development for the city of Newton, and former chairman of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.
County manager Martina Thornton said Mr. Brathwaite would be eligible to participate in the interviews and vote. In an email to the Gazette Monday, she said Mr. Brathwaite's interview would be first so that he could then rejoin the commission for the remaining interviews.
Interviews are open to the public and begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Vineyard Transit Authority administration building in the airport business park. The commission is scheduled to vote on the appointment at its March 4 meeting.

Well, if the Dukes county
Cabal Our IslandWell, if the Dukes county commissioners vote in one of their own you’ll know the fix was in. Seriously, that’s disgusting. Leon - resign if you want to be considered. Isn’t this island tired of these games?
Can someone help me
Just thinking...... MVYCan someone help me understand what the Dukes County Commission does? And why would a current commissioner be qualified to bring change to the SSA? I don’t see it. Both are like mysterious holes in space. We need change. Not more of the same.
Hi there! My name is Keith
Keith Chatinover Dukes CountyHi there! My name is Keith Chatinover - I'm one of our seven county commissioners. The county commission is the legislative body for county government on Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands. The county helps the island efficiently run many social services, conduct operations on a regional basis instead of a six-town fracturing, and act as a unified voice for the entire island. As the only islandwide elected legislative body, it is our responsibility to appoint people that have islandwide effects, such as the MV rep to the Board of Governors and Airport Commissioners.
