A new, single-story design for the Woods Hole ticket building is high on the agenda when Steamship Authority governors meet Tuesday morning in Falmouth.
General manager Robert Davis is requesting authorization from the board of governors to begin schematic designs for a one-story terminal building and a two-story utility building on the waterfront site.
After more than a year of proposing multiple two-story designs that have met with persistent opposition from both Falmouth and Island residents, the boat line is now looking at a lower-profile ticket building that would block less of the Woods Hole passage water view.
The separate, two-story utility building would house some of the equipment and functions that were to reside on the second floor of earlier designs.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. on the first floor of the Steamship Authority administration building on Palmer avenue in Falmouth. Vineyard residents who wish to attend the meeting may ride the ferry at no charge and take the parking shuttle bus to the administration building.
Also Tuesday, the board is expected to:
• Adopt the SSA’s new mission statement, crafted over a series of public open house gatherings in port towns starting in late July;
• Approve the fall 2020 operating schedule;
• Review proposed 2020 reservation opening dates;
• Vote on license agreements with passenger-only ferry lines Island Commuter Corp. and Hyannis Harbor Tours, Inc.
Boat line governors will also hear a business summary from September.
Governors will take up change order requests for payments to Woods Hole terminal architects BIA.studio and terminal contractor Jay Cashman, Inc., and a request for authorization to purchase spare parts for ferry engines.

It only took OVER a year for
Really?! EdgartownIt only took OVER a year for the SSA to grasp a one story building should be built! Seriously dense people in charge.
Denigrating the SSA as they
T Bone Oak BluffsDenigrating the SSA as they make good progress on a number of fronts is not helpful. But maybe name calling makes you feel better.
My two cents: It is
Lorraine EdgartownMy two cents: It is positively antediluvian to have to get out of a vehicle, walk into a building, purchase a ticket and then walk over and hand it to someone to get on a ferry. It should be possible to purchase a ticket online with a barcode, transfer to laptop, iPad, cellphone, etc., and then walk up to the ferry and submit the proof of payment to board the ferry. I find this just amazing in today's technological world. I have traveled to other countries, passed through customs, immigration, without talking to another person. Everything automated. When will we join the modern world?
It took decades to replace
Kelce OBIt took decades to replace the toll takers on the Mass Pike. Pensions were a big part of the problem there. I'm guessing it's also a big problem with the SSA Ticket staff. Most are pleasant enough but those jobs are bureaucratic dungeons. Replacing 2/3 of the staff with online purchasing and scanning makes so much more sense than training new ticket staff.
I only went to Southie high,
Charlie Callahan So Boston/EdgartownI only went to Southie high, not exactly a pre Ivy league school and not to Havid, and I'm amazed at what kind of nitwits demolish a perfectly good,yet old ticket office with heat and nice benches,before they have approvals and permits in hand for something new. Now they have nothing and people are going to freeze waiting for a boat when it's 10 degrees out. It's a ticket booth we're talking about, not the Taj Mahal or some 20 room status symbol eyesore on the vineyard
Is Lorraine actually serious?
island girl islandIs Lorraine actually serious? Why WOULD you want to operate in such a robotic and soul less fashion. One of the reasons to visit OR TO LIVE ON an island is to travel back a bit in time, to slow down and to savor the moment. Doing everything digitally? But what about those folks who don't have, or use (or want to use) a digital device, or to travel so hermetically sealed? I suppose that you think that the GOVERNOR is like traveling by ox cart rather than a wonderful experience where you can look out at the views, smell the ocean and taste a bit of salt on your lips. Well, I suppose that Edgartown is almost as cosmopolitan as (say) London, or Shanghai where presumably you can travel in some automaton way. Meanwhile, for the rest of us, please allow us the luxury and the convenience of including the travel bit as part of the ambience. A friend commented that she preferred to travel by a Crosby Cat (by which she meant a wooden cat boat of uncertain vintage) and she had a point.
Meanwhile -- you live on an island (presumably, so get over it!
Wow, Island Girl, such
Lorraine EdgartownWow, Island Girl, such hostility to modern life....the suggestion was not about riding the ferry, the suggestion is: make it easier for those of advanced age and disabilities, amongst other people, to get a ticket online, for those who have electronic devices, and for those who wish to walk in and pick up a ticket, do so, there could be electronic kiosks in the ticket building, or there could be units that will take money, cards, etc., and spit out the ticket such as at toll booths. I ride the ferry each year and have done for sixty years, and I enjoy riding the ferry. However, in my dotage, motion is more difficult....it happens to all of us, it is called old age, maturity, what name you prefer....
