Aquinnah fell 10 voters short of a quorum for a special town meeting Tuesday night.
“It looks like we’re going to be short of a quorum,” moderator Mike Hebert told the 27 voters who came out on a rainy, misty night (37 were needed to make a quorum). “So we’re not going to be able to have a meeting.”
Town officials had originally scheduled the four-article special town meeting for Oct. 8, but rescheduled to Tuesday night after realizing that Oct. 8 was both the first night of Yom Kippur and Cranberry Day, a cultural holiday celebrated by the Wampanoag tribe.
The warrant includes a request to increase the town’s legal budget by $125,000 to cover expenses related to litigation, including the ongoing legal battle with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) over construction of a bingo hall.
Other articles related to spending for municipal projects, including planned improvements to the town-owned Manning property near the Gay Head Light.
Officials postponed the meeting to an undetermined later date.
“Hopefully we’ll meet again soon,” Mr. Hebert said.
