Annual Exodus Is Martha's Vineyard Summer Goodbye

There were last swims, last hugs and promises to be back next year. Long lines of cars and people stretched around the docks at both Steamship Authority terminals this weekend, signaling the end of summer on a sparkling Labor Day weekend.

“The boat is coming in, my heart is sinking and I have to go back to work Monday,” said Glenn Fahey of Scituate from his seat on a bench at the wood-planked Oak Bluffs wharf Sunday afternoon.

“Labor Day weekend is the last hurrah. This is precious. I’ll be thinking about this during the long winter.”

Nearby, Sheila Hanley Longval was hugging and bidding farewell to her son, daughter in law and granddaughter who came to stay with her and her husband during August. She said she is always sad to see them go.

“Summer is very short and fleeting,” she said. “There’s less people and less traffic, but when we close down our place then it’s very hard."

A few minutes before the ferry pulled out into Nantucket Sound, a small group rushed down the passenger gangway but was too late. A boat line employee waved them back. They had an excuse to stay on the Vineyard for another hour.

“This last weekend is so gorgeous. You don’t want it to end,” said Jen Carvajal, a daytripper from New Jersey.

She and her friends, the Langley family from Cape Cod, said the group spent the day on the beach and went for ice cream and arcade games. It was the first visit for Ella Langley and Jackson Langley. Their mother Denise Langley said she was already planning a return trip for next year.

“It’s peaceful here. You feel like you’re in another world,” she said.

September signals the unofficial end of summer and also a shift in rhythms on the Vineyard. The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby begins a week from Sunday and already fishermen are in evidence on Island shorelines, chasing late summer schools of false albacore.

Ocean water temperatures are warm after a hot August with almost no rain.

Public schools on the Vineyard open Tuesday.

I remember years ago the Band used to play as the last boat left and the song they chose was Woody Guthrie "so long, its been good to know you."

I lived on island for close to 7 years and visited there since 1960. My children learned how to swim there and everyone did the rite of passage by jumping off the bridge on state beach. Trips to Chappy and the fireworks in oak bluffs were special. Labor day was always a mixed emotion. The crowds were going and then the store and restaurants would be closing also. We spent many a Christmas and New years eve just standing on a beach alone. Friday nights at the movie you knew almost all the people and some of your closest friends were the remaining shop owners. Then comes April and the bus load of visitors would arrive and the island would wake from it's winter hibernation. I remember Giordanos' would open it's pizza stand and my wife and I would go to ocean park and devour a hot sausage Pizza. We miss that magical place so much now and maybe someday I'll go back. We met the wonderful Afro american woman with 7 children from Newark NJ who came to the island in the 60's. We were also from Newark and asked her why she came to the Vineyard. She said she would rather be poor on the Vineyard than poor in Newark and at least her kids would have a chance to survive

Every summer, that last ferry ride off Island, leaving our Dad behind was always tough. I feel for everyone. But you can always return. "Til next time " he'd say as we hugged before boarding. Many many times.
Til next year everyone.

I spent 2 weeks in August & enjoyed it as always. The Vineyard is a different world..,no work, liberal thinking, & great seafood! What’s not to like!!

The Vineyard is a magical place. I have so many fond memories of spring, summer & fall there. I was told that if I left the Vineyard with some sand in my shoes, I would always come back. Every time I left, I found a bit of Vineyard sand when I unpacked & know that one day I’ll be back! So many friends; so many happy memories

So many happy memories I love the Vineyard in September. Maybe we will relocate there for our extended retirement, New Englander all the way.

We enjoyed our third vacation at the Vineyard this past May and actually got married there this last visit! Thank you for some of the best times of our life so far.
