Featherstone Cancels Musical Mondays

Musical Mondays, the popular outdoor summer concert series held at Featherstone Center for the Arts for the past 21 years, will be cancelled this summer.

Musical Mondays, the popular outdoor summer concert series held at Featherstone Center for the Arts for the past 21 years, has been cancelled this summer, the community arts center announced this week.

The weekly shows were held from June through August and featured Island musicians that drew crowds of up to 400 people. But with parking now constrained following the construction of a new campus, leaders at Featherstone said safety was a concern.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Featherstone director of development Posie Haeger said on Wednesday after a press release went out. “We’ve had recent openings that have really proven that [parking] is a struggle and we want this to be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Ms. Haeger said the Featherstone lot and surrounding area along Barnes Road do not have the capacity to accommodate the overflow of cars looking to park in the height of summer. She said complaints have flooded into the town of Oak Bluffs and Featherstone about traffic that has at times backed up as far as the roundabout.

“We don’t want to continue to frustrate the general public with traffic issues,” Ms. Haeger said.

Featherstone recently completed construction of two new buildings on the six and a half-acre campus that house a new gallery, several classrooms and administrative offices. Ms. Haeger said additional parking surrounding campus buildings was planned to be available this season, but the rough winter caused delays to landscaping upgrades, making them not yet usable.

Despite the setback, Ms. Haeger said the cancelled season is expected to be temporary.

“We are hopeful that by next season we can get back on a schedule of having some musical offerings,” she said.

how about a shuttle bus from an off site parking lot like the high school? you could probably charge a few dollars each way for the ride

Let's take away another fun event because of a few people who complain. Soon we will be the no fun island. This is huge negative step backwards for the summer crowd who we depend on as well as the islanders who need a break for a fun family event.

Bob, I disagree with you. I think the complaints of backed up traffic and people parking unsafely on Barnes were valid, and not from a few ("complainers"). Featherstone is a rare institution, and an excellent one. They recognized a real problem and handled it correctly. The did not use political muscle, although they could have done. They realized they were a victim of their own well deserved success, and remembered their values and role in the community. Fact is, they suffered from the same thing all of us year 'rounders did...big storms in March. They didn't get their parking lot finished, and instead of insisting the show must go on, they accepted that these things happen, and they would cope responsibly. Like a genuine member of the community. I am proud of Featherstone for making a tough choice, sorry we won't have the music this season, but look forward to it in the future. We are fortunate to have this nonprofit, and other nonprofits could learn from them. Because they are here in February. Are you, Bob?

One of the things I have enjoyed doing with my island family each summer. I hope that something will be worked out, perhaps a new venue, in the future. I will surely miss it this year. :o(
