The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls’ tennis team just won its fourth state championship in a row. That win, coupled with the two state championships won by the regional high school boys’ team in recent years, tallies to six state championships in seven years. And the girls’ doubles team just won best high school doubles team in Massachusetts for the third year in a row. As we celebrate our athletes and take pride in their commitment, hard work and talent, I believe it is appropriate for us to pause and say thank you to Gerry De Blois.
Approximately 20 years ago, Gerry De Blois — now a year-round resident of West Tisbury — noticed something: the year-round youth of the Vineyard did not have access to tennis or the level of instruction that would enable them to learn the game or to play and compete with the established summer programs that served the seasonal community, such as the Edgartown Yacht Club, the West Chop Tennis Club and the East Chop Tennis Club. Gerry, who sees tennis as a sport which can be played well into one’s later years and also one which is rewarding in its own right, sought to change this.
The result was the creation of Vineyard Youth Tennis. The goals were clear: help the children of the Vineyard learn how to play the game, learn sportsmanship and learn teamwork. The hope was that Vineyard youth would enjoy a degree of success on the court and that the lessons learned on the court would also propel them to academic success.
At first Vineyard Youth Tennis had no home, only an instructor and a group of young children. Eventually, Gerry purchased an 11-acre narrow triangular parcel near the roundabout in Oak Bluffs, adjoining Goodale’s pit. Gerry funded the purchase entirely by himself, and constructed four clay tennis courts and a clubhouse. All the courts were clay for a reason. Gerry believes that the game is better learned on clay and it avoids the pounding which you get from hard courts. He also purchased a bubble to cover two of the courts so that the facility could be used year-round.
Another hallmark of Gerry’s program: Vineyard Youth Tennis is free — free instruction, free tennis balls, free uniforms, the only thing required is dedication and effort. Island children have met those requirements from the beginning. Almost immediately after the program’s start, the players from Vineyard Youth Tennis began winning matches against the other tennis programs. That success has been very gratifying.
More than 300 young people, from first grade through high school, participate in the program every year. Scott Smith has successfully led the program for the past decade, and his staff includes wonderful teaching professionals, such as Michael Halisky, and the current coaches of the high school girls and boys teams, Nina Bramhall and Liz Roberts, and Tony Omer and Ryan Sawyer.
Gerry De Blois has funded the entirety of the Vineyard Youth Tennis program himself for more than 20 years now. By my estimation, this is the largest individual philanthropic gift in the history of Martha’s Vineyard. However, he is not in a position to continue to support the program in the future, and we are working on another model so that the program can continue well into the future. We will need help from public officials and hopefully from private donations.
This is a moment to take pride in winning another state championship, and to enjoy the great satisfaction of watching our children learn the game of tennis and of following our players’ academic achievement in high school and college. But it is also the time to pause and simply say: thank you, Gerry.

Ron, Thank you for this
Tom Murphy AquinnahRon, Thank you for this article. It's so very appropriate. Gerry has had a very positive impact on the lives of thousands of young Island men and women. Rarely do we ever see such generosity. Thank you very much Gerry, and thank you Ron for pointing it out. Tom

Mark Jenkins TisburyGerry, thanks for your vision and generosity. One thing I wanted to add to Ron's testimonial is the fact that Gerry also happens to a gentleman and a super-nice guy.
What impressed me the most
Adam Wilson AquinnahWhat impressed me the most about Gerry's philanthropy was that he gave kids here a chance to participate and engage themselves in a wonderful lifetime game. The program didn't stick for everyone who signed up (my son being one of them), but it was a wonderful thing to know that the center was open year round and accessible to any kid who wanted to learn how to play. And in this day and age, when kids are more likely to learn the game with their two thumbs on mobile device, it's just fabulous to realize that there is a place where the game can be played for free and in an outstanding facility. Thank you Gerry!
This seems like a perfect
Not Bjorn Borg MVThis seems like a perfect project for MV Youth. It isn't hockey, and it isn't bro-tastic, but it would be money well spent.

John Klein EdgartownRon, thanks for making the effort to call attention to one of the most generous individuals on the Island and the impact that he has had on so many. Gerry, as humble as you are, I hope you can appreciate how indebted the whole community is to you and your commitment to an early vision. State Championships are important but maybe more important are the life lessons that you have made possible for so many of our Island kids.
Well done and thanks for your steadfast commitment.
A nicer more giving man you
Bob EdgartownA nicer more giving man you’ll ever meet. Thank you for the last 20 years and let’s rally behind this concept and propel it for another 20. Never wanting to be in the spotlight but it’s well deserved and should be noted of this from the heart generosity love affair with tennis and the island. Thank you
