A large crowd gathered Sunday for the dedication of a small chapel at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

The chapel is a gift from the Rev. John Schule, the retired former longtime pastor of the Federated Church in Edgartown.

The 12-by-14 structure with double red doors and a steeple was moved from Reverend Schule’s home in Edgartown. His inspiration to build it came many years ago while he was studying in Scotland and noticed small family chapels everywhere that he traveled in Europe.

The chapel has been used for small ceremonies and caroling at Christmastime; those uses will continue now in its new home at Featherstone.

More than 100 people turned out for the dedication Sunday, a cool mist cloaking the pastoral setting off Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs.

Steve Ewing, an Edgartown dockbuilder and poet who had volunteered his services to help move the chapel, read a poem of dedication, and there were remarks from Featherstone leaders, family members and close friends.

Wearing a straw hat and red shoes, Reverend Schule basked in the warm glow of recognition for his small chapel.

Just wonderful!
You are truly a special person John. So many love you. Can't wait to sit in the chapel and pray.

Lovely share. My Mom and I always received inspiration from your sermons.
