Ferry Woods Hole Cleared to Return to Service

The ferry Woods Hole has been cleared for service and is expected to return to the Vineyard route after two days of trials on the Nantucket route, Steamship Authority general manager Bob Davis said.

Speaking to the Gazette Tuesday morning, Mr. Davis said the freight/passenger/car ferry had been cleared to run by the Coast Guard Monday night. The vessel was sent to the Nantucket route for two days so technicians flown in from Mexico and Vancouver could monitor her on board, he said. The reason for sending the ferry to Nantucket was the length of the work day — the vessel runs a 12-hour day on the Nantucket route and an 18-hour day on the Vineyard route, Mr. Davis said. “We can’t have the technicians on board for longer than 12 hours,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Davis said the ferry Island Home was expected to undergo sea trials in Fairhaven Tuesday and hopefully return to the Vineyard by day’s end. That ferry has been in drydock for routine maintenance but a problem with a bow thruster delayed her return to service, Mr. Davis said.

He said he is hoping to see full service to the Vineyard restored by Thursday, following two weeks of major disruptions in service after breakdowns on both the Woods Hole and the Martha’s Vineyard. On the Woods Hole the problem was traced to a sensor connected to what are called controllable pitch propellers. On the Martha’s Vineyard, which recently underwent a major mid-life refurbishment, there were two different problems, one involving faulty check valves and another involving a backup generator.

The Martha’s Vineyard is back in service, and the boat line has contracted with a privately-owned high-speed passenger ferry to shuttle passengers back and forth. That service is expected to end Thursday if all goes according to plan, Mr. Davis said.

The ferry breakdowns are on the agenda for discussion at the SSA’s port council meeting in Hyannis Wednesday morning. Mr. Davis said he expects to make a full report at the meeting.

“This has been a difficult time and frustrating for everyone involved,” Mr. Davis said.

The high speed ferry service, for passengers only, has been a terrific find. Ask any passenger who rode on this boat in the past week and you will get only positive reviews. Getting from V.H. to W.H. in 20 minutes has been terrific. The daily commuting workforce loves it. The families with cars in the Palmer lot love it as well. If the S.S.A. pays attention perhaps they could offer this service throughout the year?

It saves 1 hr R.T. for daily riders. Not to mention the predictability of having an hourly service. Shame the SSA has a monopoly on the route. SSA listen if you care......

At the next SSA meeting could Mr. Davis please explain why '
"technicians" have to be imported from Mexico and Vancouver and Denmark to rig repairs? If those folks have "travel problems," the whole Island economy is held hostage while we wait. Is this a matter of choosing the incorrect software from sources from

away, incomplete training for our local folks, or problems in Fairhaven?

If they do provide a hi speed ferry run between woods hole and vh i can almost guarantee it wont be for the $8 cost it is now. These ferries are fuel guzzlers. I would guess it might be as much as $19 to $27 one way.

Why are you guessing the price -- to scare people off? Let's ask for facts before killing this opportunity to offer better service to us Islanders. One point of reference - SeaStreak's website posts 2018 rates from New Bedford to OB now. Islander rate is $60 round trip. The distance is at least 4x to go from New Bedford to OB vs Woods Hole to the Island. I don't think fares would be anywhere near what you are dangling. But we need facts, not guesses.

The high speed ferry is a great service and should be made permanent. But please SSA, do not build one. Buy one from the people who made Sea Streak. Whoever you currently work with to design and build boats is ripping you (and us) off.

I really don't see the big issue here.... Things break down they will get it right. They will work the kinks out.

We keep hearing about "routine maintenance" for the Island Home, yet I don't recall that boat in service since perhaps last fall. Does this mean that the Island Home will be undergoing "routine maintenance" every year for six months out of twelve?
It is starting to appear that the SSA has been under terrible mismanagement, choosing to invest tens of millions into boats that don't run, and tens of millions into real estate purchases and developments, that considering the boats don't run, might have been more wisely spent on functional ferries that run, rather than giant "cruise ships" that don't run.
