Land Bank Expands Holdings In West Tisbury

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank has announced the acquisition of a 22.4-acre property in West Tisbury for $3 million.

The property is located between Nip ’n’ Tuck Farm and John Presbury Norton Farm in West Tisbury, another land bank property. The seller was Sheila Murphy whose late husband, Robert, cared for the land until he died last fall, a land bank press release said.

Negotiations for the property between the land bank and the Murphys have been ongoing since 1990.

The property abuts State Road with a pine tree-lined walk to a hilly, grassy meadow speckled with small kettle ponds. James Lengyel, executive director of the land bank, described the land as a quiet and tranquil place perfect for hikers, hunters, non-motorized bikers and nature photographers to enjoy.

“We hope and believe that people will go there and feel great respite, and be impressed by how beautiful this land is,” he said.

A preliminary management plan calls for a study into the land’s agricultural potential and integration into the land bank’s abutting trail system.

Mr. Lengyel said the land bank will close the property for a year while ecologist, Julie Russell studies the land and creates a management plan. Ms. Russell will look for any features that require attention and devise a public access trail that harmonizes with the land, he said..

Residents with questions or concerns about the purchase are encouraged to attend one of the land bank commission’s regular Monday meetings in Edgartown or a meeting of the West Tisbury town advisory board.
