A car landed in the shallows of the Edgartown harbor Monday afternoon after the driver mistakenly backed over the edge of a cement pier that leads to the Edgartown Reading Room.
No one was injured in the incident.
“Basically someone backed up and accidentally hit the accelerator,” said Edgartown patrol officer Curtis Chandler who was on the scene.
The driver of the Ford Explorer was not immediately identified. Police said there will be no citations.
Officer Chandler said the driver was helped out of his car by two bystanders. There were no passengers.
“They were able to help him out of the vehicle and walk him to shore,” the officer said. “He’s fine, everything’s good.”
Police were called to the scene at 1:01 p.m. An ambulance and fire truck were also on site. Traffic patrol officers routed traffic around the area.
By 1:40 p.m. a tow truck from JWL Transport arrived to remove the vehicle from the water.
Edgartown fire chief Peter Shemeth said the partially-submerged vehicle released only minimal fluids into the water.
Steve Foster dove for the fire department, attaching a chain to the vehicle. The tow truck slowly pulled the vehicle from the water. By 2:09 p.m., the car was on the beach.

No citations written? Wow how
blurbNo citations written? Wow how lenient. Accident or not someone could have been sitting on one of those boats. Seems the tow trucks have to be just as versed at marine salvage as towing these days.
