Edgartown Police Officer Receives Commendation

Edgartown police officer William Bishop was commended Monday for going out of his way to help members of the community.

According to an commendation presented by Chief David Rossi during an impromptu ceremony at the selectmen’s weekly meeting, Officer Bishop learned of a couple who urgently needed a ramp installed so they could get in and out of their home.

He organized funding from the Edgartown police and fire associations, Chief Rossi said, and organized a work crew that installed the ramp last Saturday.

“I just think it was extraordinary,” the police chief said. “To take a problem like that, take care of it on his own time. When we have an officer like that that wants to do these things in the town of Edgartown, we have to recognize it.”

Officer Bishop thanked other volunteers who helped build the ramp.

“Basically what I do is ask a bunch of people for help,” he said. “I’m not afraid to ask.”

In other business, selectmen issued an annual beer and wine license for the Tin Hangar, a restaurant planned at the former Flatbread restaurant near the Martha’s Vineyard Airport.

Earlier this year, the board granted the restaurant a seasonal all-alcohol license. The restaurant owners intend to operate year-round, but the town has reached its limit of all alcohol licenses. The Tin Hanger will operate during the summer season with an all alcohol license, and during the winter will offer beer and wine only.

Selectmen also voted to permit the Harbor View Hotel to organize a New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Edgartown harbor again this year. The board also granted an extension to the hotel’s liquor license until 1:30 a.m. that evening.
