Boys & Girls Club Tournament Celebrates More Than Golf

<p>A birthday for Ted Morgan and a big welcome for Jessie Damroth, the new executive director of the Martha&rsquo;s Vineyard Boys &amp; Girls Club, were cause for celebration at the Edgartown Golf Club Saturday.

There was more than one cause for celebration at the Edgartown Golf Club’s 32nd annual fall golf tournament held Saturday.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club, now under new leadership with Jessie Damroth taking the helm as executive director. Ms. Damroth grew up in Chilmark and worked recently in development at Duke University and Williams College. She began her new job last week and attended the tournament kickoff Saturday.

The event also was a birthday party for Fred B. (Ted) Morgan Jr., president of the golf club for 25 years, World War II veteran and possibly the oldest living veteran of the boys and girls club. Mr. Morgan turns 95 this year; at the golf tournament Saturday there was cake and a celebration.

Edgartown artist Meg Mercier donated 50 prints of her original painting which depicts Mr. Morgan marching with other veterans in the Edgartown Fourth of July Parade, an event he led for many years.

While the original painting is slated to hang in the former Edgartown Carnegie Library, the prints are available for purchase by contacting the Edgartown Golf Club.

Mr. Morgan and his golfing buddies shared cake and tales from the greens and fairways. Friend Roy Langley told about the time Mr. Morgan missed an important shot and threw his putter into a tree. Mr. Morgan, smiling, said, “Yes, I remember.”

Later, Edgartown Golf Club general manager Mark Hess honored and congratulated both Ms. Damroth and Mr. Morgan.

Mr. Morgan addressed the crowd, thanking all for supporting such a good cause.

The tournament is an 18-hole, handicap-adjusted four-player scramble.

Great to see Ted Morgan honored yet again. He has been one of my heroes since I arrived here in 1968. A hell of a man and an island treasure for certain.
