Ode to the Road Race

Free the lobsters. A poem inspired by the Chilmark Road Race.

Lobster Sonnet

The runner’s prize: a double fisted

Lobster handshake one never had expected.

The clawed trophies writhed and twisted

And wide rubber bands kept her nose protected.

What shock to see that she had won

And now displayed crustaceans high.

Their mottled legs and wet shells shone;

The crowd exclaimed, craned necks, and sighed.

The small winner, as surprised as we,

Regained her breath and dried her sweat.

The creatures reached for liberty and searched for sea;

She thought she’d keep them as her pets.

Despite our taste for lobster bisque and victory,

She raced them down the beach and set them free.

This wonderful sonnet was actually written with my granddaughter Clio Wyman Miller in mind.
She was astonished to win the girls eight and under and her prize was two small lobsters.
