Seven passengers traveling on a Vineyard Transit Authority bus sustained minor injuries following an accident at the Triangle intersection in Edgartown Tuesday involving the bus and a car.
Both vehicles were traveling inbound toward downtown Edgartown at the time of the crash, around 11 a.m. Tuesday, Edgartown police said in a press release. The driver of the 2016 Jeep Compass, 59-year-old Mark Allen Anderson of Fargo, N.D., had stopped at the stop sign at the end of the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and tried to make a U-turn onto Beach Road, police said. The VTA bus was traveling down Beach Road at the time and was unable to avoid the collision, police also said.
The bus had approximately 30 passengers on board at the time. In addition to Edgartown police, EMS from Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Tisbury responded to the scene, transporting seven VTA passengers to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for what police said appeared to be minor injuries.
Traffic was backed up in all directions for some time during the response.
Police said the operator of the vehicle was found at fault and was cited for failure to yield at the intersection.

Town should place a NO U Turn
Very Annoyed Vineyard HavenTown should place a NO U Turn sign at that intersection with a sign indicating turn here (that road between The Rigger and Triangle) for Oak Bluffs via Beach Road. Plus signs telling drivers not to block the Post Office exit and entrance. The Edgartown Planning Board should have never agreed to issue a permit to Mr. Hajjar to build more apartments which will cause traffic issues. It is a very congested area before the building.
While I agree with more
RalphWhile I agree with more signage, but they won't stop knuckleheads though, like this one from Fargo.
If these apartments weren't
Brian Smith Oak BluffsIf these apartments weren't built here where would you suggest? Somewhere down the road so the residents would have to drive to the post office, the bank, downtown, the hardware store, the fish market, supermarket, restaurants, liquor store, walk in clinic, etc, etc? These businesses are all within walking distance to these apartments. One could easily live here and never need a car. This project will reduce traffic, not add more traffic. It's called smart planning ( and common sense)
This island suffers from poor
Very Annoyed Vineyard HavenThis island suffers from poor planning! Everything is an after thought. The Post Office area (Triangle) is a swamp which is quite evident when it rains hence Post Office Lake. I understand the need but planning and overburdening of poorly designed road system that should have been addressed as part of the project. Again, poor planning, poor decisions and after thought is epidemic on this island.
Though I want people to be
washashore EdgartownThough I want people to be safe I sometimes wonder if more signs are always the answer. The signs they mounted in OB after they re-did the Lake/Circuit Ave intersection just becomes a blurrrrrr.
Cited for failure to yield at
Sandra Grant EdgartownCited for failure to yield at intersection! Really?? You got to be kidding. What about all those people that got hurt, how does that work ? They didn't ask to be hurt & have hospital expenses! The irrisponsible driver of car should pay for all medical expenses!!
Really??? Wow, hope you never
GuyWhoCommentsReally??? Wow, hope you never get in an "accident".
That would be a civil matter,
Tyler New YorkThat would be a civil matter, getting money for your car or medical claims. Not a criminal matter which involve the authorities.
sign, sign everywhere a sign.
rick heath Chathamsign, sign everywhere a sign........ do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?
Wear your seatbelt on the bus
Mom EdgartownWear your seatbelt on the bus.
I have been driving those
Lorraine EdgartownI have been driving those roads for over fifty years and never even once thought of attempting that turn at that location. Plain stupid.
Lorraine, right? Clearly Mr.
what Lorraine said TisburyLorraine, right? Clearly Mr. Anderson made a horrible mistake. Especially since there are a number of ways to get to Beach Road from Edgartown Road at the triangle. He could have turned at the entrance to Your Market..or farther up at Stop and Shop Pharmacy..or after that at the turn off before the yield sign. He even could have gone past the triangle and made a normal turn around at any one of the businesses along upper Main Street and be on his way. No signage needed in my opinion. Playing chicken with a tour bus? Plain stupid move is right.
Regarding the redesigned
Rick EdgartownRegarding the redesigned parking at PO Square, I am particularly concerned about traffic backing up into the roadway at the entrance. It has become more of a problem with parking spaces now on both sides of the entrance. Traffic backing out of the spaces must reverse into the incoming lane causing a backup even in light traffic. Wait another 2 weeks.
