Courtney Brothers Plan New Eatery in Edgartown

<p>The former Edgartown Deli will become the newest bar and restaurant in the heart of the village. Island native Chris Fischer will be chef.

A refurbished building on Main street Edgartown will become the newest bar and restaurant in the heart of the downtown village.

Formerly the Edgartown Deli, the building is owned by Patrick and Ted Courtney. Across the street, the Courtney brothers also own Port Hunter, the popular restaurant they opened four years ago.

Well-known Island native Chris Fischer will be the chef at the new place. Mr. Fischer is the former chef at the Beach Plum Inn and author of the Beetlebung Farm Cookbook, recently nominated for a prestigious James Beard award.

Edgartown selectmen signed off this week on plans for the restaurant, which stills needs approval from the zoning board of appeals and the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Plans call for a small indoor seating area and 24 seats at five outside tables.

“Ten seats at a seated bar, some indoor seating and a little outdoor seating,” Patrick Courtney told the selectmen.

He said a mid-June opening is planned.

Why are you celebrating the Courtney brothers for closing an iconic Island spot.

I do not think they own the building. I think it is a lease. Looking forward to try it out.

Let's hope the food is holistically rather than arrogantly local.
Delicious would be a nice bonus. Music would be lovely…
at a volume that could still indulge the faltering art of dinner
conversation.

I agree. I'm not sure about the holistically, but EVERYTHING does not have to be local.Soft music is always a plus.

There is more outside seating then inside on a very congested corner....who thought this was a good idea...

BF

Couldn't agree more!!
I don't like the outside seating that has been creeping into Edgartown. Sure as heck is out of tradition . It adds nothing to our town, only to the pockets of greedy owners!!
Shame on those who approve such things!!

Where in the world am I going to get my Philly Cheese Steak now? I will make it at home, obviously. What on earth are we going to do without the Deli?

Wow. Vitriol and judgment in these comments without much knowledge. Greedy owners? Tradition? If one doesn't like change on the island then they've forgotten they were once part of change too.

Lovingthe old MV Woodbridge, CT

Vitriol it is not! Change...there is no change on MV opps I mean looking like Nantucket more and more, that's just what we need more 20,0000 sq foot homes and snobby upscale restaurants. Love those $38.00 burgers.

Never been to the deli since moving here 21 years ago because it never had a good reputation, there's a reason Chris Fischer had a short run at the Beach Plum. Call me crazy but diners don't like a chicken dish served with the neck and head attached. Not going to over well with Muffy and Buffy crowd in Edgartown.

I'm happy to see a new place open. Unfortunately, Edgartown Deli lost its quality a few years ago...used to have the best reubens and pickles! I also hope they maintain a decent price point. I'm all set with the $35 plate for what should be an amuse-bouche.

Wow... Reading these comments... So many insults from the chef, to the business, to description of people in Edgartown! For goodness sake! Congrats boys on New business and wish you lots of luck! Seems too many look to rip one another apart than support! Hey, we r a tiny island-- try a little encouragement of one another!

Do we really need another overpriced, out of character restaurant/bar there?

We loved the food that Chris Fischer created at the Beach Plum! We were sorry to see him leave, so thrilled he'll be right in Edgartown.

My goodness...can anything just be "great and good luck?" The naysayers can never get out of their own way and how sad for them...a sunny day is always cloudy! Patrick and Teddy have done a fabulous job with the "Port Hunter," always gracious, terrific food, and I am sure they will do another stunner of a restaurant across the street. Our family has loved what they have done to the building, the art work inside, the cozy seating, the eclectic menu, the wait staff, etc. So, "break a leg" on your new venture...can't wait for it to open.

Really people???? The Courtney brothers have done so much for the town of Edgartown! Look at all the properties they are cleaning up!! Not to mention a FABULOUS restaurant in The Port Hunter. They are hard working nice guys who deserve a huge pat on the back! I am a huge fan and wish them all the luck in the world. I for one look forward to eating at their new restaurant and will continue to be a regular at Port Hunter! All the best to Patrick and Ted!!!
