Acting Airport Manager Will Step Down

<p>Deborah Potter will resign effective next month, airport leaders announced Thursday. Mrs. Potter has been heading operations at the airport since August, when former manager Sean Flynn left his post.

The acting manager of the Martha’s Vineyard Airport will leave her post next month, airport leaders announced Thursday.

Deborah Potter has been acting manager since August when former manager Sean Flynn left his post. Mrs. Potter formerly served as assistant manager under Mr. Flynn, who formally resigned in December after 10 years on the job.

Mrs. Potter’s resignation takes effect March 18, airport commission member Richard Michelson said in a press release.

“On behalf of the MVAC we thank her for her dedicated service to the airport and the Island community. We wish all the best in her future endeavors,” the release said in part.

Mr. Michelson is heading the commission while chairman Myron Garfinkle is out of the country. “Deb Potter has worked diligently to insure the Martha’s Vineyard Airport has had the best opportunity to succeed and prosper under her leadership,” Mr. Garfinkle said in an email to the Gazette Thursday. “Mrs. Potter’s loyalty, professionalism and work ethic set a high standard and shining example. She will be missed by all, especially the members of the Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission.”

In her brief letter of resignation, Mrs. Potter said she will help with the transition to a new staff.

The resignation will leave the airport with its top two management positions vacant. The airport commission has retained an executive search firm to screen candidates for the manager’s position. Commissioners are hopeful they can hire a new manager by May.

The news comes during an ongoing period transition at the Island’s only commercial airport, which has seen changes in management and on the seven-member commission that oversees operations. The county commission appoints the members of the airport commission.

As an active pilot at Mvy airport since 1985, Mrs. Potter was an extremely loyal and dedicated manager. She will be missed. She was always aware of everything and took her job very seriously. Best of luck to her new ventures

Deb Potter has served MVY through 25 extraordinary years. Her first 15 years as an Air Traffic Controller included the transition to increased security following the 9/11 attacks. Her nearly 10 years as assistant manager started in the years soon after that, with associated challenges, and have continued under the extraordinary situation of her having to shoulder much of the full management responsibility when Sean Flynn was impaired but still employed, and since his resignation. She deserves recognition and thanks for the extra efforts she has contributed ensuring that MVY, a vital lifeline for MV, has continued to operate safely. Thank you, Deb, for your cheerful professionalism through such unusual times.

Really West Tisbury

Just a Thank You dont we owe it to Ms Potter to look into the real reason that she feels the need to depart and not just buy into the belief that this should be the way. Some agency needs to do a real look into the Airport and not trust the local news reports.

Really!!! West Tisbury

This has to make you wonder what is really going on at this Airport no one seems to really know what is going on at the Airport. Good people are leaving others we never find out what is the real reason for their departure when is and impartial agency going to investigate what is going on and really hold those accountable for the clear mismanagement that is being forced upon the Airport. Not this public love fest that the is shown to the public the actual real truth behind this Airport.
