Cape and Islands state Sen. Dan Wolf announced this week that he will not seek a fourth term next year.
Mr. Wolf has represented the Cape and Islands since 2009.
In a statement released early Thursday morning, Mr. Wolf, a Democrat from Harwich, thanked his family, friends, employees, State House colleagues, and constituents.
“Serving as state senator from the Cape and Islands has been one of the greatest honors and experiences of my life,” he said in the statement, calling his decision not to run “the most difficult I’ve made.”
The senator did not give a reason for his decision. “For me, civic engagement includes elective office, but it encompasses much more,” the statement read. “I have learned this working with so many great people over the years. My commitment to continue this fight is as strong as ever; after next year, it will take new forms.”
Mr. Wolf is the co-founder and part owner of the regional airline Cape Air. His business interests in the airline led to a battle with the state ethics commission in 2013, shortly after he announced his candidacy for governor. The ethics commission ruled that because Cape Air had agreements with state agency MassPort to fly in and out of Logan Airport, Mr. Wolf was violating state ethics law.
Mr. Wolf permanently suspended his gubernatorial campaign and said he would resign his senate seat, but a later petition to the ethics commission led to new regulations that allow Mr. Wolf and others in his situation to hold elected office while having “financial interest in contracts that pre-date their election or appointment.”

Maybe planning a raise for
deshandra brown mvMaybe planning a raise for the Cape Air Pilots? Wow. how generous. $1.17 an hour more than a NYC fast food worker, despite the among the highest 'revenue per passenger mile' in the airline industry!
From their website:
Cape Air offers a competitive pay scale for our pilots, which is comparable to the industry. Detailed pay scale information is provided in the interview process. Please contact the pilot recruiter for more information.
First year C402 Captains start at $16.17 per duty hour. Our Pilots are paid by the duty hour, not the flight hour like many airlines. First year C402 Captains can earn on average a salary of $31K to $40K per year, depending on their schedules.

Richard Toole Oak BluffsDan Wolf is/was a breath of fresh air in a very stale political environment. What a shame when someone with a successful business and lots of experience dealing with finances and a diverse customer base and lots of starts and stops and overlapping routes is denied the chance to be our governor. Sadly running for and holding political office has become something most qualified, caring and honest people can not afford both for the financial and emotional toll it requires. Thank you Dan and best of luck with the rest of your life. Richard Toole

As President of the Vineyard
Betty Burton Vineyard HavenAs President of the Vineyard Committee on Hunger and Coordinator of the Serving Hands and Family to Family Food Distribution Programs, I would like to sincerely thank Rep. Dan Wolf for all of his work to help those in need on the Island. Dan recently received the Public Advocate of the Year Award from the Greater Boston Food Bank. Serving Hands, in particular, receives their supplies from the Greater Boston Food Bank and without the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program, which he supports, we could not keep these programs running. 37% of the people in need across the Commonwealth do not qualify for government benefits because their income is too high, yet our cost of living is double that of other areas of the state. We rely on these funds to help those on the Island that are food insecure. Thank you Dan for all of your help. We will certainly miss you.
