A portion of State Road in West Tisbury was closed to traffic for a short time Thursday afternoon after a truck carrying sand rolled over after trying to avoid a collision, police said.

The driver of the John Keene Excavation dump truck was transported to the hospital, West Tisbury Det. Matt Gebo said Thursday night.

On Monday, Detective Gebo said the driver, Lewis Colby, was not seriously injured. "I believe Mr. Colby is on the mend," he said.

Detective Gebo said the truck was traveling northbound on State Road and approaching the intersection with Panhandle Road and Scotchman’s Lane. A red SUV traveling on Scotchman’s Lane took a right turn onto State Road, he said, which caused Mr. Colby to apply his brakes. In trying to avoid the collision, Detective Gebo said, and carrying a full load of sand, the truck rolled onto its side.

The driver of the SUV, Robert Schwartz, was found at fault for failure to stop at the stop sign, Detective Gebo said.

With sand left on and near the roadway, the surrounding portion of State Road was closed for a period of time, Detective Gebo said. The clean-up took a “well-coordinated effort” with John Keene’s employees, Vincent Maciel of Maciel Tree and Land, and the West Tisbury Fire Department, he said. John Keene employees were able to right the truck, he said, and the fire department was on the scene to contain any fluid and assist the clean-up.
