Tisbury police are warning people to be on the alert for a telephone scam under way on the Island that appears to be targeting seniors.
Officer Jeffrey Day told the Gazette late Wednesday that he had received two reports from seniors who had received telephone calls from someone appearing to represent a medical alarm system. People receiving scam calls are being told that a family member had added a product to their service and financial information is needed to pay for the service. The apparent scammers are calling from the telephone number 662-304-3858; the number shows up on caller ID as a wireless telephone number, Officer Day said. He advised people to be aware and not give out any financial information over the telephone.
"Do not engage if you receive a call," Officer Day said.
Police said anyone who receives a scam call and wants to report it may do so by calling the Massachusetts Attorney General's hotline at 617-727-8400. A complaint form may be filled out on the Attorney General's website.

I received a telephone call
christineI received a telephone call today from a woman who said her name was Courtney and wanted to find a person with the same name as my daughter. Courtney would not give me any further details about herself and gave her number as 0288207896. Courtney said that it was a confidential personal business matter and that she had spoken to my sister. I asked what my sisters last name was and what the persons last name was she was trying to contact. The information Courtney gave me was incorrect and she gave me my surname as being a name I had not used for over twenty years. I rang my sister and asked her about it and Courtney had rung my sister to locate the other person who happens to be my daughter. The information Courtney had about surnames was incorrect. I rang my daughter who had no idea what I was talking about. My daughter googled the telephone number and it was not listed. My daughter and I figure that it is a scam of some description.
Lets face it if someone rings me up and wanted to leave a message, if they were genuine, they would give me the Company name they represented and their own surname etc. This person didn't. So be very careful, there are a lot of scams on the telephone these days.
I agree, never entertain such
Carla OhioI agree, never entertain such calls. It's a scam. As a matter of fact, the phone number has already been reported at http://www.callercenter.com/662-304-3858.html for scam calls.
The next time you get a call like that, hang up and report it to the police.
