Starting this summer, JetBlue Airways will begin running seasonal nonstop flights between the Vineyard and Boston.
JetBlue announced Tuesday that service between Boston Logan International Airport and Martha’s Vineyard Airport will begin June 17, with daily flights between the two airports through Sept. 7.
Flights will depart from Boston at 5:25 p.m., arriving on the Island at 6:12 p.m. The Boston-bound flight will leave at 3:27 p.m., arriving at 4:15 p.m.
In 2011, JetBlue began seasonal daily nonstop service between the Vineyard and New York city. JetBlue also operates service between Nantucket and New York and launched service between Nantucket and Boston in 2012.

Maxwell Butler Los AngelesChoice is good, but I'm with you, Colin. Gimme that old 402 every time. It doesn't seem right to fly to MV on any other airline.
Ha! Support Cape Air? I can
Amused Edgartown, MAHa! Support Cape Air? I can fly round trip to Los Angeles cheaper than I can to Boston. How about Cape Air supports us?
But will it be regional jet
Finally EdgartownBut will it be regional jet service or turboprops? Is this merely a code share with Cape Air or will it be JetBlue planes?

JetBlue started service
James Logue Rosemont, PA and ChilmarkJetBlue started service between Boston and Philadelphia in the past two years and it has been a refreshing change from US Airways, but I agree with Colin. We always look forward to buying our next commuter ticket book because it means we are coming back (and forth) and everyone at Cape Air is happy to assist us. Let JetBlue cover the New York route.
Typical JetBlue. Contract
Jay Cape CodTypical JetBlue. Contract your work out to Cape Air… Make promises to not steal the routes, and then take the Boston route from both of their main islands, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard… Why not just take over Piedmont’s old route of Philadelphia, or add an extra New York City route to compensate for all the single flights you cancel all season.
Oh no an affordable airline
About timeOh no an affordable airline giving islanders an alternative to an expensive option only afforded to a select few. What ever you do dont support them.
Get a clue, this isn't for
Peter Oak BluffsGet a clue, this isn't for islanders, just for the the summer people. Just another example of a company skimming the cream off the top at the expense of the businesses that try and offer us their services year round. Let's see how much you enjoy this new "competition" if it ends up making it financially unfeasible for Cape Air to offer year round service due to the loss of revenue in the peak summer season, that is, if you live here year round.......
Sure thing Pete because we
About timeSure thing Pete because we all know how horrible competition is on mv. I live here year your round and have most of my life and frequently take cape air and I can say I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford the luxury, most islanders can not say the same. God forbid some people get a reasonably priced service that they otherwise couldn't afford because some people are scared of competition. Cape air isn't in business to make the lives of people on the vineyard easier and better their in it to make a profit just as jet blue. Wake up.
And for the record the only
About timeAnd for the record the only year round service cape air offers is to Boston. That's it. Everything else is seasonal as in summer only as in so much for your amazing local year round airline that lives to provide islanders with the invaluble service of going 100 miles for $400
hmm, no off season service to
Peter Oak Bluffshmm, no off season service to New Bedford, Hyannis or Nantucket? I have no issue with fair competition About Time, but I certainly don't want to introduce a player into the game that may turn airline service here into a seasonal one. Btw, roughly $160 each way to and from Boston right now, $190. during the summer. Not sure where that $400. you mentioned came from.
Cape air tickets to boston
about timeCape air tickets to boston from the island range from 330-500+ in the winter. Sure you can go to Nantucket or Hyannis if you want to make a quick stop in Boston. New Bedford is possible if you really want to go to New Bedford, be my guest. Also, just to remind you cape air isn't the only airline here in the summer. There is also no way you can say with any degree of certainty that bringing a competing airline in will put another out of business, never mind using that as the reason to stop what Pete deems "unfair" competition. Just to be fair lets say your nightmare is realized and Cape Air does become seasonal or worse goes out, it would only be because they couldn't compete in a fair market and they deserve whatever fate that brings them. Compete or die, its incredibly disheartening for a business to see the vineyard play its typical survival of the unfittest just so people can play favorites.
You seemed to have missed the
Peter Oak BluffsYou seemed to have missed the underlying point of my comments About Time. What if the SSA had no licensing powers to other shipping/ferry operations wanting to do business with the Vineyard? Your "excursion" ticket would cost at least $300-$400 in the off season if not more or maybe there would only be sporadic or weekend service when it is cost effective. Restaurants have the same issue with liquor licenses. If you want a year round license, you need to operate year round, not just on weekends. If you want businesses to serve you throughout the year, you need to offer them some type of protection against operations that want to cherry pick the best days to operate. If not, you will be left with little or no services year round. You seem to be comfortable with that option, I'm not.
I seem to be getting your
About timeI seem to be getting your point loud and clear Pete. You seem to think that it's okay for some outside power to come in and stifle competition if you deem it unfair or if it doesn't meet Pete's best best interests. That business should not be allowed to run freely as they choose and Pete will come in and tell them when they can run, how they can run, and whom they can run against. On your point of ssa they absolutely shouldn't have any control over any ferry or shipping business that wishes to come to the island, there total control over everything imported and exported from here is one of the things that has made it incredibly expensive to live and do business here. Haven't you been reading either of the papers in the last few months. Horrible example Pete. You also seem to think that prices are just numbers picked out if the sky and seem too have very little regard to the law of supply and demand. Surely they wouldn't have anything to do with prices. Crazy I know.

I get the problem....Cape Air
HughW ChilmarkI get the problem....Cape Air has served the island well for a long time year round....JetBlue comes in and siphons off business in the summer. But really. Look at Cape Air's fares.....often about $360 round trip....New York to San Francisco nonstop on United can be bought for about $456 with advance purchase. What's wrong with this picture? Sure, the cost structure for flying an aircraft with 150 people (some at much higher fares) is far different than flying a 9 seat aircraft. I just wish B6 flew year round from JFK to MVY.
I agree it use to cost $200
Bob EdgartownI agree it use to cost $200 round trip to the Island on Cape Air and now it is just a crazy price. Cape Air gets away with it because they are the only game in town. Bring on some competition.
Don't mind the competition
Peter Oak BluffsDon't mind the competition Bob but they should have to provide year round service. Careful what you wish for.....
Apparetntly people dont want
About timeApparetntly people dont want competiton if there's nothing In it for them ie providing year round service whether it's feasoble or not. They don't care. It's all or its nothing and unfortunately some people would rather have nothing than have a little of something good even just for the summer.
I checked out Cape air's
deshandra brown mvI checked out Cape air's website to get some info. It appears they pay their pilots $15 per hour. Its not like they're 'sharing the wealth' on these $400 Boston flights. You can't get someone to cut your grass or clean your house for $15 per hour on the Island.

I often flew to Boston when
Finally! Martha's VineyardI often flew to Boston when the cost was $200 round trip. That was manageable for a working class islander. However Cape air is now $370 minimum and out of most average people's budget, including mine. If JetBlue is less money then bye bye Cape Air for me. Now that they don't have the market cornered perhaps CA will lower their flights out of loyaly to us!
