A Vineyard Haven accountant pleaded guilty Wednesday to filing false tax returns in which he underreported more than $800,000 in income over three years, according to a statement by the U.S. District Attorney.
Roger A. Armstrong, 61, pleaded guilty to three counts of filing false tax returns, said spokesman Christina DiIorio-Sterling in a statement. Mr. Armstrong, a certified public accountant and tax preparer, did not report about $790,000 in gross receipts and about $47,000 in revenue for tax years 2009 through 2011, Ms. DiIorio-Sterling said, and as a result he did not pay $200,000 in taxes.
The statement said Mr. Armstrong lived and worked on Martha’s Vineyard and owned rental property in Massachusetts and Florida.
U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani scheduled Mr. Armstrong’s sentencing for April 28. According to Ms. DiIorio-Sterling, statute provides a sentence of no more than three years of prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gain or loss, whichever is greater for each count, but actual sentences are typically less than the maximum penalties.

I'm sure all of us are guilty
Linda Silva Oak BluffsI'm sure all of us are guilty of something in our lives where we have since straightened up and taken the right path.
I feel that if he is going to pay the fine necessary, the worst should be maybe house arrest?
Think about it, if anything I think Belichick & Tom Brady should get 10x's that sentence for deceiving the entire nation!! Good luck Roger, I'll still be coming in soon for tax season!

One of the loudest and most
Former client Martha's VineyardOne of the loudest and most vicious complaints about undocumented immigrants on the island is that they do not pay income taxes. However, purposely underreporting, cheating, lying, and burdening others with paying your huge share of tax debt are all okay, quite forgivable, a "mistake", and worthy of compassion in certain (white and local) situations? I do not understand this at all. Roger needs his customers? I need a reliable and honest tax preparer.
He should have a full medical
Ken EdgartownHe should have a full medical exam. There might be an explanation for this oversight of non payment. We all get old, I sure feel it.
