The cast of The Vineyard filmed scenes at State Beach.

Reality Bites: ABC Family and Martha's Vineyard Break Up

A spokesperson for the ABC Family show confirmed this week that The Vineyard won't be renewed for a second season.

It ended on a cliff hanger at the Gay Head Light, but fans of the reality show The Vineyard won’t be tuning in to find out what happens next.

A spokesperson for the ABC Family show confirmed this week that the docu-drama was cancelled by the network. There was no further comment.

The show put a spotlight on a group of 20-somethings, all on a quest to find themselves as they worked and played over the course of a Vineyard summer. Filming occurred last spring, resulting in eight hour-long episodes. The Vineyard premiered on July 23.

With picturesque Martha’s Vineyard as a backdrop, the show followed a cast that worked at the Black Dog Tavern and lived in a house on East Chop Drive in Oak Bluffs, The television program often filmed the guys and girls sunning themselves in the cooler spring months and splashing around the waterfront. Romantic entanglements, friendship loyalties and life decisions dominated the plot lines.

The season ended with some cast members announcing they planned to stay on through the winter while others went off in pursuit of other dreams.

At the end of the season, Nielsen ratings showed The Vineyard averaged 517,000 viewers over the course of the season and received a rating of 0.4.

Even when many questioned the authenticity of the show, most agreed that the glossy shots and aerial views of the Island were beautiful.

When the show wrapped last September, executive producer Dave Broome told the Gazette that he was “proud” of the show.

“I think we’re making a series that cuts through into a new genre for us — not just for us, but for the industry,” he said. “I hope we did [Vineyarders] proud at the end of the day and how we portrayed what the Island looks like.”

Loved the show! I will definitely miss the show because the vineyard is beautiful! Being born and raised on the coast of New Jersey, MTV's "Jersey Shore" gave our beautiful beaches and towns the WORST rep ever! This show made Martha's Vineyard look incredible & fun & the locals should have been happy to have their hometown portrayed in a positive fashion

Me and my girlfriend watched it weekly mostly for the sheer fact that it was so fake. We laughed at the dialogue and situations because they were unreal, and frankly, very silly. We did enjoy it for the laughs and the scenery, but otherwise it was a bust...

Great show...more liked the bits of drama..wanted to see what happens to the relationships friendships etc
It was the next closest thing to "the hills or the city show..cheap entertainment.

I also enjoyed the show. Was wondering when it would be starting back up for the summer, sorry to see it is gone. Nice to see a show geared for the 20-somethings for a change. Refreshing and nice scenery.

Since I've never been to the Vineyard I was drawn in by the characters on the show and it made me want to visit, I've been to beaches in New Jersey and it doesn't seem like it could even compete. My family also visits Rhode Island and I feel it would be very similar to what the Vineyard has to offer, I can understand where everyone is coming from, but I really wish there was another season because I loved it great job cast and crew

Island Native Chilmark

The series didn't portray the Vineyard in a true light at all.The Vineyard is mainly a blue collar island with real people in it.It's not a playground for the rich, yes, you need to make a good living to be able to survive here. The series was insulting at best and I'm glad it was cancelled.
Rhode Island is not comparable to the Vineyard at all, some sections of it are very pretty. You'd need to come down and see for yourself and then you'd get an idea.

As someone who spent their early 20's working at a resort on the beaches of Westerly, RI I can honestly say this is how it pretty much goes for the "summer help". Most of us were seeking college degrees at respected schools and will always remember with fondness waiting tables, being bell hops or working the beach house. Those were some of the greatest summers (I met my husband there and we have two amazing children now) :). Sad to see it go.

I liked the show. Living it the city the show offered an hour long escape to a beautiful place each week, making me want to visit the vineyard. I never once assumed everyone from the island was rich spoiled brats. If anything I would see it as the "rich kids" visiting the island were spoiled, but with any show you get "exaggerated" characters. It's all in how you peperceive it. I was looking forward to spending time watching again this summer and wanted to see how everyone turned out. I am sorry the natives were so offended by the show. Hopefully no one really thinks less of you because of the show. If they do, dont worry about the shallow minded people who can't separate t.v. from reality. Thank you for letting us visit your beautiful island each week. I quite enjoyed it.

Tired of ABC Family creating and canceling show after show after a season or two at most. They need to get their act together and decide on a show they want to keep. As a supporter of the station and many of its shows, it is getting frustrating finding out that the show was cancelled just after after I had gotten into the show. They need to find a worthy show that fans will stick with through several seasons, or else ABC Fam may lose a lot off viewers (especially after PLL ends its reign).

I'm sad a new season of the Vineyard isn't returning. I always looked forward to a new episode each week. The show was always left in a plot twist at the end of each episode, including the last episode of the season. I loved the love stories and friendships between the young 20 year olds, and of course the beautiful beach! I'm disappointed people didn't like the show as much as I did.

Honestly, some of y'all need to calm down because if you simply didn't like the show then why would you care about it. Like all you had to do was change the channel and find something else to watch, there's so many other shows on different networks! Some people liked the show and the drama, so just because you didn't like it you believe it should be canceled? Thats just like if you really loved a show but others didn't you would care? It's just dumb to me all it takes is a remote or buttons to change a channel.

I haven't been to the Vineyard in a while, it was nice to see it. The show was very fake/scripted. I didn't care. Life there working in shops in the 1980's was different, wicked fun and very enriching with the variations of people there. We hung out with everyone including islanders. We weren't in the showy dress for dinner end of the island and NEVER went out for dinner EVER. It is a very fun relaxed welcoming place to live in the summer with lots of parties. As a kid there are parties and adults had parties, however the adults were more exclusive. I think everywhere in the world there are posers, I just don't think the conglomeration of posers is at the level this show had them. Such a gorgeous place....

We like this "reality show" here in Sweden, sorry to hear it´s been cancelled. People don´t think less of the native population, on the contrary, y´all seem very friendly and kind. :) So, does anybody have any news about the folks from the show? Did Luis stay for real? Did she leave her bf - Matt? etc etc...

Kind regards from Sweden...

that show was a joke it had all the wrong cast and it didnt tell you anything about the Vineyard at all the vineyard is alot more then you showing the rich snobby part theres so much there that you could of shed light n but instead you took freaking valley girls as actors to do the show personally you should of taken the people who actually live on the island all year around and done the show that way it would of been a better show and it would of just been better then taking people who know nothing about the vineyard and dont even come around i go to the vineyard every summer im not one to mock and make fun of the people who live there you want richy type of people then you may want to make a show about Nantucket

I watched the show every time it came when it was new episodes and reruns of old episodes. I think that it was a good show, and pretty sure a lot of people would agree with me. I would like it if the show came back and think that if people were interested in it maybe you should start a website and ask if people would like to see the how come back and they can only vote yes, I think you should put it on the ABC family website because a lot of people visit that site.

I loved the show too have been hoping it would come back. I really enjoyed it. I don't think this show was putting done your town. I enjoyed it because I've never had the chance to go to the vineyard I enjoy the show with your town. I think some of the reality shows on mtv are much worse. It was a bunch of people that live in a house and work together this is real life decisions that people make every day may not be on tv. I'm sure a lot of people could relate to this. It's not saying your town is bad. So do you think the news shouldn't be aired because they only talk about the snobby rich people that go to the the vinyard should the news be cancelled as well. I loved that show and saw nothing negative towards your town I think your taking it a little too personal. if my town ways on the air like this I would be excited. They've filmed in Boston marshfield cap code and surrounding towns. If you don't like it don't watch it it's your choice.

I loved it. Take for what it was. People are far to critical. Who cares that the Black Dog was mentioned 1 too many times and that it didn't really show the true Vineyard. If I wanted to see the Vineyard I would go there. I wanted gossip, smut and drama exactly like all other reality TV and that's what I got. For a bunch of people that hated it so much you sure watched it. Change the channel. There are hundreds of TV shows that do not interest me but I could not even tell you what they are about.

The Vineyards look lovely. I really want to go and visit now from what I saw from the show. I need closure. Bring the show back at least for an "update episode". Please. It was a nicer version of some other summer reality shows (won't mention any names) and thank God for that.
