The Dukes County commission voted Wednesday to appoint two new airport commissioners, ousting longtime commissioner John S. Alley and Benjamin L. Hall Jr.
The Dukes County commission voted Wednesday to appoint two new airport commissioners, ousting longtime commissioner John S. Alley and Benjamin L. Hall Jr.
Mr. Alley, who is also a county commissioner, had served on the airport commission for more than 33 years, most recently as chairman. Mr. Hall had served three years.
Christine Todd, a county commissioner and last-minute candidate for the appointment, and Richard Michelson, a former airport employee, will replace them on the seven-member commission. The appointments run for three years.
The decision not to reappoint Mr. Alley and Mr. Hall, whose terms were up, comes amid a tangled workplace dispute at the airport that came to light this winter when an employee filed a claim of sexual harassment and retaliation in the workplace. The dispute, which includes charges against airport manager Sean Flynn, has played out in public and in closed meetings and remains ongoing.
At the county commission meeting Wednesday, commissioner Tristan Israel said he had seen footage of a January meeting held at the airport where the dispute was discussed, and as a result would not vote to reappoint any sitting airport commissioner.
“I don’t know any of the facts, and this is not about the right or wrong,” Mr. Israel said. “I was appalled at the way that meeting was run, appalled at the lack of process, appalled at the counsel.”
The county followed its usual process of seeking candidates for the airport commission by advertising the upcoming vacant slots this winter. Mr. Alley, Mr. Hall and Mr. Michelson all submitted letters of interest. Ms. Todd expressed interest at the last minute on Wednesday, and county commissioners debated whether it was proper to consider her. Some felt it was within bounds, while others said the process had historically been limited to previously announced candidates.
“I think it's an opportunity to have new eyes to be on that board and I am convinced there needs to be some change there,” Ms. Todd said. “I don’t take the consideration to enter into this post lightly, and a phrase that keeps occurring to me is ‘be the change you want to see.’”
In his position statement, Mr. Michelson said he felt the airport should work on its relationships with employees, tenants, the county and the greater community.
“I really believe some of the relationships at the airport have really just crumbled,” he said.
Reached by telephone Thursday, Mr. Alley questioned the reappointment process, calling it “bad government.”
“The thing that rankles me the most, is that if you have a set of rules, you have to follow the rules you have,” he said.
Mr. Alley said his ties to the airport date to 1959 when he began working for Old Colony Aviation. He said the decision to remove him from the commission was tied to the recent employee dispute.
“That is what people do, they will take an issue and decide that is what they are going to do, and decide this is his time for reappointment,” he said.
“I happened to be the chairman and you had to face tough decisions and you make tough decisions. It doesn’t make everybody happy.”

I too watched those videos on
concerned tisburyI too watched those videos on MVTV and was sickened by the arrogance of the airport counsel, the airport commission, manager Sean Flynn and asst. Manager Deb Potter. I applaud the dukes county commissioners for having the integrity to do what's right.
don't know about the issues,
Christopher Gray People's Republic of Chappaquonsettdon't know about the issues, can't quite believe Mr. Alley is anything but completely upstanding but ... really great pic, Timothy Johnson, and kudos to editor who assigned it.

Go get em rich!!!
Bat ObGo get em rich!!!
If you only know what goes on
J.L AirportIf you only know what goes on with the MVY management skills and, social relationship with employees and others. Its like " You have the right to remain silent or you will be fired". I don't know how they get way with the things they do !!! What goes around, comes around. Too many years of abuse of power !!!!
I'm not sure if anyone else
Coacholdtimer ChilmarkI'm not sure if anyone else noticed but the airport manager was not present at the meeting nor has he been in all week. I haven't seen his personal vehicle at the airport all week. Maybe he's in Orlando enjoying his time share. Good luck Rich. Maybe you can make some changes up there. Lots of work ahead for you.
If they would not censor so
Censored OftenIf they would not censor so heavily in here you know what goes on behind the scenes!
It's nice to see some action
Disgusted Hines PointIt's nice to see some action from the County commissioners. Although it appears to be to late to save Miss Tessmer's job from the rubber stamp of the airport commissioners. However the real problem still remains. Sean Flynn needs to be REMOVED.
Can't agree more with
Coacholdtimer ChilmarkCan't agree more with Disgusted. Sean Flynn must go. Assistant manager Potter should go first. How can a Marine and a woman go against all the beliefs she had drilled into her head while in the corp. must be tough to sleep with the guilt of not standing up for a woman who needed her help. Flynn has a year to go on his contract , it might be time for the county to cut its loses and let him go early. Although the sensitivity training he will be receiving over the next thirty days may help him to see the light.
One day at a time.
Good luck Rich, your many
Serenity now EdgartownGood luck Rich, your many years working for the Airport ought to bring some real and new insight to a commission that has sipped a little to much of the cool aide. Nothing but excited to have you on board.
Thank you to the County
oldtimer EdgartownThank you to the County Commissioners for making the right move and thanks to the Gazette for following the story it seems that the
Times can't get the courage to report on the good the County has done or go against Mr. Flynn and the Airport. Maybe they have been threatened by legal action as was the Airport Commission if they did not go Mr. Flynn's way. I will take the boat from now on!
Coacholdtimer, see how much
Woody Williams! Vineyard HavenCoacholdtimer, see how much you know actually don't know it's called "Corps" not corp. You sound like Obama when he said "Navy Corpsman" is pronounced "core-man", not "corpse-man". A very serious mistake!
From everything I have seen over the years the airport has been run in the most outstanding, professional and secure manner. It has made money hand over fist, hasn't needed to be bailed out by the County and every single trip from all the past and recent presidential getaways here have all gone off with out a single hitch. The Secret Service and Homeland Security give them 5 stars! What does that tell you?
As far as you saying "How can a Marine and a woman go against all the beliefs she had drilled into her head while in the corp. must be tough to sleep with the guilt of not standing up for a woman who needed her help." Coacholdtimer - If the woman had personal issues as I seem to have found when watching that hearing on MVTV why should she stick up for anybody who is throwing a wrench in the system especially doing so just because she is a woman.
I can say that Mrs Potter has more Honor, experience and professionalism in her baby finger then you could ever hope for and for which I can see you know nothing about. She has that Eagle, Globe and Anchor you do not and you are probably the one who cant sleep at night because you dont!
This has been a long standing
Denise Vineyard havenThis has been a long standing problem at the airport. It is about time it is being addressed. I feel what is going suffer is customer service at the airport. There has been no one trained to replace Ms. Tessmer position. The summer season is fast approaching and there is never anyone in office when pilots are checking in.
Just got thu watching the
AJ CummingsJust got thu watching the county commissioners meeting. Very interesting how Christine Todd once again snuck in to a governmental position. MmMmMM. Looks like it was all figured out before the meeting even started. A must watch meeting for sure.
Out of interest I also
Not again Gay Head / Palm Beach FlOut of interest I also watched that county commissioners meeting and was a bit upset. I had thought all the behind the scenes wheelings and dealings there was over since the dark days of C. Borer, R. Sawyer, W. Davis then the airings of the county review commission. Looks like here we go again.
I too watched the county
concerned tisburyI too watched the county commissioners meeting. I believe they knew what change they wanted to see and made it happen. Does that make them sneaky or prepared? It appeared to me it was difficult for them to not reappoint John, and Mr. Hall's speech did not help. If u want to see sneaky go to the airport for breakfast on Fridays and listen/watch the airport commissioners with their own behind the scenes meetings. Sit close, you'll hear some info and watch them leave and go into Sean's office to continue their "secret meetings". It's not illegal for two board members to talk, but at the airport I've seen three to four of the airport commissioners talking. Did u watch the last airport commissioners meeting? If that wasn't pre-discussed then what was? I applaud the dukes county commissioners for caring.
