The 1,000-foot crescent of sand that lies south of the Lagoon Pond Bridge came as an early Christmas present for the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank, where outright gifts of land are rare.
The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank got an early Christmas present this week: a gift of 1,000 feet of beachfront and dunes on the Lagoon Pond in Oak Bluffs.
The property, a visible and familiar crescent of sand that lies south of the Lagoon Pond Bridge and curves toward the former state lobster hatchery, was an outright gift from the Moses and Alvin Strock families.
“It is a uniquely attractive property,” said land bank executive director James Lengyel Monday morning after a press release went out about the acquisition. “On late summer afternoons both the light and the wind funnel right up the Lagoon and land right on this beach.”
Mr. Lengyel said outright gifts are rare for the land bank, which buys public conservation land using funds collected from a transfer fee on most real estate transactions.
The closing was Friday. The property will be named Doug’s Cove in honor of a member of the Strock family.
“Comprising 4.4 acres, the property has long been of interest to the land bank,” the press release said.
Mr. Lengyel said the property has been on the land bank list for possible purchase since 1988, when the first discussions began with members of the Strock family. “This is another example of how the land bank commissioners and town advisory board members all have a very good sense of patience,” he said.
Preliminary management goals for the property call for recreational visitors to park at the county’s adjacent Eastville Point Park, on the opposite side of the Beach Road. Vehicles will not be permitted on the beach, and boats cannot be stored there, but shellfishermen will be allowed to use the beach for harvesting and offloading shellfish. The beach runs toward the former state lobster hatchery, property which is still owned by the commonwealth. “So now the whole area is public,” Mr. Lengyel said.
He said the dune separating the beach from a small coastal pond will be restored in the coming year to a natural vegetative state. Currently it is covered with bittersweet and other invasive plants. A viewshed will be created to allow Tisbury-bound motorists and bicyclists a view out to the Lagoon.
The property will be open for full public use beginning next summer, Mr. Lengyel said.

Can you say Federal Tax
VeryAnnoyed TisburyCan you say Federal Tax Credit? So both parties are getting a Christmas gift? It is nice that MVLB will make provisions for the fishermen. For the public no overnight boats or kayaks. Give a gift and they will name the area after you! How about Tea House Beach?
You're sort of miserable this
BiilyOB OBYou're sort of miserable this time of year, aren't you?
A view shed? Why is it called
Rooting for the gift Vineyard HavenA view shed? Why is it called a shed? Does this mean they are going to uproot trees so people in cars can see the lagoon better? This does not seem to make much sense. Why would we want to uproot trees that have gradually and persistently put down their roots thus strengthening the land surrounding the lagoon, providing bird habitat, shade, and roots that clean the pollution that goes into the lagoon from the cars and diesel engine propelled trucks and all of the pollution from everywhere. This is so people who are not walking or taking their bicycles can be provided a view? Tell me this is not really what the land bank is about. Please.
It wasn't all that long ago
Sara Piazza EdgartownIt wasn't all that long ago that you could see for mile after unobstructed mile here on the island. Today, between the overgrown hedges and vines, along with all the new fences and intentional privacy hedgerows, it's gotten a bit claustrophobic as far as some people are concerned. I'm quite certain that the land bank has enough integrity and expertise to manage this stretch of beach just fine.
I agree that it is nice to
Katherine TisburyI agree that it is nice to see "mile after unobstructed mile." Just as it is nice to look at the Mill Pond. But this mile-after-mile condition was to a great extent created by sheep farming, as the Mill Pond was created by damming. Neither the mile-after-mile views nor the Mill Pond is a natural ecosystem. If we let natural succession proceed we may find ourselves with greater long-term aesthetic assets, plus more biodiversity and better defenses against surges, etc. Just as with the Mill Brook, if we remove the dam and let the brook reassert itself, we may be surprised at how nice the whole thing looks, quite apart from the increased biodiversity.
I really don't see why we need a "view shed" at Doug Cove. There is plenty of opportunity to see the Lagoon as one drives over the bridge. As for the approach to the bridge, there is a pedestrian crosswalk there and drivers should be aware of that. I'll wait and see which "invasives" are tagged for eradication. I would be happy to help yank out Oriental bittersweet.
No good deed goes unpunished.
SissyOBNo good deed goes unpunished..! Great addition in key location for the Land Bank! Thank You!
View shed is a term used to
MtgmmcfView shed is a term used to describe opening the view. Anther is view channel. It doe not mean uprooting trees. Usually done by selective pruning and removal of dead limbs. Anything done on this property will require a permit from the OB Conservation commission.
I knew Doug Strock and I am
Katherine TisburyI knew Doug Strock and I am glad that his name will forever be associated with this lovely spot, where I often walk.
I also question the "manage the dune to create a view shed" idea. Remove the invasives, but otherwise, leave the dune alone. I think there are some gnarled shrubs growing there. Are they invasives? Or what I call "invasives of convenience"--non-native plants that are suddenly demonized as "invasives" when they get in the way of someone's vision, and I don't mean the "view shed" type of vision.
Katherine,
SANDRA Swanson Tiburon CAKatherine,
Doug was a good friend in Manhattan. I learned about his passing only recently. Nice comment.
Love that the Strock family
Stark raving clearcutLove that the Strock family donated this beach. It's a wonderful spot. Love that the conservation commission is involved. But does the con com in Oak Bluffs have the will to not let the Land Bank do whatever they want to do? In Vineyard Haven the Martha's Vineyard Museum asked to be allowed to take out over a hundred red cedar trees and clear cut an entire micro climate ecosystem and were allowed. It does seem as though going to the Conservation Commission if you are a local power only serves to put a rubber stamp on what is requested. Sorry, but now there is a lawn, fertilizer running off into the pond, automatic sprinklers that come on when it is raining, no more root system to clean the water before it reaches the pond. Come on now, let's open up our eyes. NSTAR is bad enough, but when our own Con Coms get into the fray on the side of the clearcut crowd, it's really bad.
Very nice piece of property!

I am delighted at any gift to
Richard Barbieri Oak BluffsI am delighted at any gift to the Island's preservation. However I deplore the headline writer's use of "Gifts." Either the Strocks gave the land or they donated it. "Gifted" is a new abomination in our language, leading recently to the print coinage "giftee." Next I expect to read "Attention gifters. It's time to get out your list of giftees and start deciding what you will gift them, this gifting season." Please, Gazette, stop the loss of unspoiled language.
A great tribute to Doug
