Construction is scheduled to begin this week on a new liquor store near the airport.
Brion McGroarty, who has operated Town Provisions in downtown Edgartown for 23 years, plans to move the store to a new 2,700 square foot building that will be an addition to the Flatbread Company, a family pizza restaurant on Airport Road.
Mr. McGroarty has received approval for the project from the zoning board of appeals, the airport commission and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. He still needs approval from the town selectmen and also the ABCC to transfer his liquor license from a downtown location in Edgartown to the new location. He has not yet filed formal application to change the license to the new location, but has told the town it is coming, assistant to the town administrator Kristy Rose said.
Mr. McGroarty said his company and Flatbread are real estate partners, but the businesses will be run completely separately. “I have nothing to do with Flatbread, and Flatbread has nothing to do with us,” he said.
“Flatbread is not operating a liquor store,” Flatbread manager Tina Miller said.
Construction on the liquor store, which will now be called MV Wine and Spirits, will take place throughout the summer, and Mr. McGroarty anticipated a late summer or early fall opening date.
The new store will be similar to Town Provisions, he said. It will sell mostly wine, craft beer and liquor, and will be open year round.
The new location was set in motion in 2010, when the selectmen and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission approved Mr. McGroarty swapping his seasonal liquor license with the Benjamin Hall family, owners of Great Harbor Gourmet and Spirits, for an annual license.
Mr. McGroarty praised the additional space and parking the new location would provide, as well as “a central location on the Island. We’re very, very pleased.”

Edgartown is really pushing
mike NY/WTEdgartown is really pushing the limits of it's boundaries here.
I know it is a little late for this kind of comment, but the last I read this was only an idea.
Talk about changing the Vineyard, this will only set up a new commitment by commercial enterprises to expand to areas that have never been commercial. What is the Commission thinking by allowing a liquor store almost up Island.
If you want liquor go to town down Island and get like you have been doing for - ever- What's next Alley's - The Chilmark Store - West Tisbury over near the Post Office - or even better - let's put a liquor store in Menemsha - How convenient
!!Disgraceful!!
Also looks like a good place
Ken EdgartownAlso looks like a good place for the new medicinal marijuana dispensary. Too bad he will have to wait a year.
Sorry Mike, the open public
Josh EdgartownSorry Mike, the open public meetings must of happened while you were still in New York. The airport area has two restaurants, a gas station with a car wash, storage facilitates, UPS & Fedex, the DMV, the VTA, Comcast, Coca-Cola, a veterinarian, and a furniture store, not to mention 30 years of having a nightclub "almost up Island." It's well established commercial area that is centrally located and as the benefit of being removed from any residential areas.
The Vineyard is not a magical fantasy land, it's a place where normal people live and work. Private citizens have every right to open up private business wherever they are zoned to be allowed.
Do you truly believe that a
Mike West TisburyDo you truly believe that a liquor store right by the airport is going to make the area more industrial than the airport already has? Maybe you should spend a little more time reading about the casino plans rather than trash talking something that will be a convenience to folks up island. You make it sound like they're replacing a farm with a liquor store. Don't be a sore loser because you didn't come up with the idea first.
Hey Mike, Do you have liquor
Islander West TisburyHey Mike, Do you have liquor stores in your NY town? I'm sure you do. I get that you think it's cool to tell your friends how "quaint" it is to visit the island and have to drive 2 or 3 towns over and sit in traffic to get a bottle of wine for dinner. But, surprise, there are real people here who work hard all day to take care of people like you and it will be a real pleasure not to have to sit behind you in traffic in OB just to buy a bottle of wine for dinner.
Mikes got a point here. We
Jamie Oak BluffsMikes got a point here. We've all watched enough csi Miami to know that liquor stores are places that breed degenerates and harbor crime. Maybe mike should stay in New York this summer to be safe. And the next. And the next...and the next...
Mike, NY/WT
Coach Billy EdgartownMike, NY/WT
"Disgraceful!!" REALLY? A local and hardworking family expands their business to a larger space, in an already-commercial area, that will better serve the island. They are intelligently and thoughtfully implementing a strategy to offer better prices, in a more convenient location, to more people...reducing traffic, pollution, waste, etc.
THIS, you say, is disgraceful? Goodness Michael...Michael, Michael, Michael....You are right about one thing; it is a change on the Vineyard. A good change; more of which the island could use…
If their prices are
Mr. B ChilmarkIf their prices are reasonable, it will save me the extra gas (and pollution and time) of driving the extra miles to Oak Bluffs. I'll just tack it on to filling the propane tank!
Go to town hall and suggest a
mike NY/WTGo to town hall and suggest a liquor store in Chilmark.
You would save even more gas then.
Put a Bar there too and a Grocery store(a big one - Stop and Shop), you would hardly ever have to go down Island
See how far that recommendation goes.
Unlike Edgartown, Chilmark is
Josh EdgartownUnlike Edgartown, Chilmark is a dry town so going to the town hall and asking for a bar would be rather silly. Sorry your version of the Vineyard is getting ruined, poor thing.
This is clearly a statement
Jamie Oak BluffsThis is clearly a statement made by someone who doesn't belong here. Bitter, unhappy, and desperate for attention. Edgartown, on the border of west tisbury, is still Edgartown, which is NOT a dry town. The sooner you wrap that around you head the better. Maybe we can turn miles house into a Walmart?
This is terrific news. It
Rob D West Tis.This is terrific news. It doesn't make any sense for people in Aquinnah/Chilmark or West Tisbury to have to travel many miles across the island simply to purchase a bottle of wine or six of beer. The location is out of sight for the vast majority of people travelling around the island, and hopefully will give Flatbread just a bit more exposure, and eventually decide to make their delicious pizza available year round.
Where will Pied Pipah patrons
Jordy EDGWhere will Pied Pipah patrons get their boat beers?
I agree, it was so convenient
Skipper EDGI agree, it was so convenient to pull up to the dinghy dock and grab beers for the water at the old location. Is Great Harbor going to carry Coors Light?
It will even be serviced by
George Stein EdgartownIt will even be serviced by public transportation, great idea. Now if we can only get pizza delivery and join the rest of civilization. When you get off a plane and rent a car why should you have to go all the way into one of the towns to buy anything ? Sure it will be seasonal for volume but overdue to say the least.
By the way Mike, IIRC, there
S.J. ChilmarkBy the way Mike, IIRC, there won't be a casino on Wampanoag land in Aquinnah as the tribe will build one on Indian land in Taunton. They are considering high-stakes bingo for the island. I read it in the Gazette, so it must be true.
While respecting comments of
Samuel Close North Truro and Vineyard HavenWhile respecting comments of opposition I see more of a win-win!
I think this is a great thing
Frank R Boston / MVI think this is a great thing. I will only shop at MV Wine and Spirits when I am on the island. It is a local business, family owned, by real Americans, and real islanders. People who invite us to share there island with them when the weather is nice, and welcome our business with open arms. We should all start buying locally and putting money back into a community that welcomes visitors, like us, so graciously every summer. Anyone who speaks ill of family business, and or this particular family, should feel free to vote yourself off the island.
I personally think this is a
Annie Bradshaw West TisburyI personally think this is a FANTASTIC idea! It's about time the up island residents don't have to travel so far to buy a bottle of wine. I would also be in favor of a grocery store in the airport region! That would be even more beneficial.
