A 17-month-old girl was in good condition at a Boston hospital Wednesday and her mother had been released after being airlifted from the Vineyard Sunday morning following a one-car accident.
Kathryn Medeiros, 24, was the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that went off the road and crashed into several trees at 3:23 a.m. Sunday on County Road in Oak Bluffs, police said. Ms. Medeiros, a front seat passenger, Gilmar Desouza, 28, and their daughter, who was in the backseat, were trapped inside the vehicle, Oak Bluffs police Lieut. Timothy Williamson said. Rescue crews from the Oak Bluffs fire department and EMS personnel extracted the people from the car, Lieutenant Williamson said. The vehicle was severely damaged and the airbags were deployed.
Ms. Medeiros and the child were both taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and later airlifted to Boston hospitals. Ms. Medeiros was released from Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday, and the child was reported in good condition and out of the intensive care unit at Boston Children’s Hospital on Wednesday.
Ms. Medeiros was cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and a marked lanes violation. Police said alcohol was ruled out as a cause for the crash. Edgartown and Tisbury officers provided mutual aid to the scene and County Road was blocked to traffic while emergency personnel responded.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
In a separate incident Sunday afternoon, Kristen Canniff, 21, of Milton, was injured in a single-car accident on State Road in Vineyard Haven, Tisbury police told the Gazette. Sgt. Christopher Habekost said the car left the travel lane as it was heading eastbound on State Road, driving up on an embankment, striking an oak tree, and rolling over at least twice. The vehicle came to rest in an eastbound traffic lane, he said.
The woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance, Sergeant Habekost said, with injuries that were not life threatening.
Tisbury Lieut. Eerik Meisner said that Ms. Canniff was cited for a marked lanes violation.
