Despite months of vocal critiques and speculation, when the ABC Family docu-soap The Vineyard premiered Tuesday night, all appeared quiet in Oak Bluffs. While several cast members made appearances on national entertainment shows and live tweeted, cast member Cat Todd sat at a bar surrounded by close friends and waited for the show to air.
“It all seemed really surreal until now,” said Ms. Todd. “I feel like it was just a summer activity and now it’s here.”
Ms. Todd is one of two Islanders featured in the primary cast of the show, which was filmed on the Island in May and June. “Our story is probably the most real,” said Cat’s mother, Christine Todd, who also appears on the show.
Ben Rossi is the other Vineyard resident featured.
While many cast members were contacted through their agents, former Vineyard residents who now live in Los Angeles found Cat through Facebook and heavily recruited her. She said she initially had little interest. It wasn’t until she met the producers on the Island in April and subsequently flew to L.A. for a screen test that she decided to do the show, she said.
Seated along the bar at the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company, a line of locals watched the hour-long show Tuesday night. The reviews were very much the same. The cinematography, which featured aerial shots of Martha’s Vineyard landmarks, was beautiful. The Black Dog, a major marketing partner, was overexposed.
“Nationally they’re going to love it,” said Warren Gosson. “Locally, no.”
Mr. Gosson’s sentiment was shared by Sivanah Brown, an Island resident who went to school with Ms. Todd. “I have mixed feelings,” she said. “I like that they’re advertising the Vineyard, but I don’t like that they’re not advertising the true Vineyard.”
Over at the Sand Bar & Grille, where the show screened on televisions both inside and outside, mixed feelings summed up the way local viewers felt as well.
“It’s very nice other than that it’s not life on the Vineyard,” said Oak Bluffs resident Tilma Zyla, who was enjoying sushi while watching the premiere. “Other than that, it’s nicely plotted.”
As the first episode came to a close, Mr. Gosson summed it up: “It’s going to be a good show, but it’s not a real reflection of the Vineyard,” he said.

Now just one more reason that our islanders looks like fools in the eyes of the world! Thank GOD it is on at 10pm when my small kids are asleep I dont want them thinking this is where they live! I hope there is no episode 2 never mind 6 more!
I watched 5 minutes so I
Kelly Anne LovellI watched 5 minutes so I could be allowed to be as disgusted as I was before even watching. It was so poorly acted. If you are going to make a show about kids in the Vineyard in the summer, okay, fine. But PLEASE don't call it unscripted or reality. I read an article that used the work "vapid" to describe ... NAIL ON THE HEAD.
I also want to know why the
Kelly Anne LovellI also want to know why the Black Dog sold out. We know they don't need the money. I have been coming to the Island for summer since I was 3 (31 years ago) going to the Black Dog Tavern for breakfasts and getting a new tee at the end of the summer was always the drill. My boys are 2 and 4 and they love. But, truth be told, I'm embarrassed for the Black Dog now.
Horrible show. Our island is
Member of the Amaral Clan OakbluffsHorrible show. Our island is so much more, our people so much better. Embarrassing!
You really need to get over
Tom ChappyYou really need to get over yourself. I own a house on the Island and spend plenty of time there in the off season. What makes 'your people' or 'your island' any better than anywhere else? Where are all these great kids, that are so much better than the kids on the show? Nothing is worse than Islanders complaining about the 'wash ashores'. If not for the tourism, that Island would look like a 3rd world country, there would be no money, no buisness. All the blue collar hard working Islanders would be jobless if all of us seasonal home owners didn't have work for them to overcharge us for. All those pretty Island kids would be in a small wooded school house with no books, if us seasonal home owners didn't pay taxes year round on our homes on that Island.
You have to be kidding. We
Patty Vineyard HavenYou have to be kidding. We got along without you just fine, just without all of the things that suburbia brings - greed, overbuying, stress, tension and traffic. While I appreciate summer visitors and tourists I think YOU are the one who needs to get over himself.
You need to get over yourself
anne columbus, ohioYou need to get over yourself. Martha's Vineyard is better than anywhere else. You must have believed that. You own a house there. Insulting Islanders is a great way to get your picket fence painted cheaper. I'm sure everyone will survive without your tax money. Sell your place and move to Long Island.
The show "The Vineyard" could be set anywhere. It doesn't resemble anyone I've ever met on Island or on planet Earth for that matter.
Tom,
Chappy ChappyTom,
The Vineyard is unlike any place in the world.....You need to get over yourself ....

I agree with you Tom.

I can not believe that the
Annette Lucht Rochester, New YorkI can not believe that the Selectmen approved such a terrible program to be seen by all who love The Vineyard. Why show this type of program to encourage young people to think it is all fun and not show the beauty and untouched solitude that The Island has to offer. This is not how The Island should be portrayed!!
It would appear the photo
Coach Billy EdgartownIt would appear the photo tells the whole story. There are atleast eight people in the picture, however only three watching the show. Of those three, only one appears to be laughing or smiling...wonder why?
watched 10 minutes -- boring,
hughw chilmarkwatched 10 minutes -- boring, vapid, who cares? I have no idea of what the viewership number is for the ABC family channel, but I doubt it's very high and I doubt further that many will watch this piece of junk.
I haven't been to the Island
David Shetland San DiegoThe first episode was a big disappointment as it turned out to be a very shallow soap opera. On the bright side maybe the Island is better off that more people don't know what they are really missing.
My daughter, a resident,
Ms. Wise Las Vegas, NVMy daughter, a resident, asked me to watch this new show to see what I thought. Bad acting, terrible dialogue, too many closeups and not enough of the beautiful scenery. I am so glad that this is not my only impression of the Vineyard. Please, if the town counsels give permits for filming as many communities do, don't renew them. This kind of show will only perpetuate the notion of the sterotypical islander.

It was weird to watch. I
John G. BostonIt was weird to watch. I agree with most of the comments above. But want to add that MV is a pretty diverse place. I honestly don't think I saw one brown faced male, not even in the background or walking down the street. That was really really weird. It was like they said no brown skinned people allowed or something. How Bizarre.
IT WAS EXTREMELY BIZARRE!
ORO MAY LOS ANGELESIT WAS EXTREMELY BIZARRE! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN INDIVIDUALS THAT DON'T HAVE THEIR HEART INVESTED IN THE VINEYARD TRY TO CAPITALIZE ON IT.
I completely agree with you.
Emily oak bluffsI completely agree with you. In the real world of MV, we are a diverse place. Different ethnic backgrounds, people of all shapes and sizes. I didn't notice anyone who was not white and thin. The island is like anywhere else, we have people from all over the world, we have heavy people. This show doesn't show any of that. The island is beautiful, but as for the writing, I give it an F. Being an islander, born and raised, I was shocked that they would say island girls are un-cultured. I've traveled the world, graduated college with a psych degree, and paid for it all out of my own pocket. Why do they feel that they can insult us ans have us be okay with it? Unbelievable.
So true! The only black girl
Pat NYCSo true! The only black girl in the show, is not even a real prop. The island is diverse, it's not just blond girls! Even their style isn't of the island.
I have a plethora of shows
Ashley Ocala,FLI have a plethora of shows that i watch and I seen the previews to this thinking oh why not. A new show i can add to my collection. Uhm no...The first five minutes seemed rushed and awkward like you can obviously tell that they're trying to move the story forward. The acting seemed forced and the dialogue between the characters was not natural at all. I feel like they just went around and found the best looking people possible and threw them on an island and said mingle. but if they did that i'm sure the show would have been better than the crap i saw. And I kept watching hoping it would get better and it really didn't. Idk if i will watch episode 2. honestly they should just cancel it while they have the chance.
so terrible. so glad its on
DMVNY OBso terrible. so glad its on at 10pm vs the news. Noone on or off island will watch this boring show. I gave it one chance thinking it was going to show the beauty of the island which did not happen. It was terrible. I hated it.
We have been spent summers on
Nausea OhioWe have been spent summers on MV since 1975. - so curiousity made us look.
Even the quick glances of Vineyard scenes could not redeem this amateur attempt to "ad-lib" life on this special island.
We are now embarrassed to wear our treasured Black Dog items.
Apparently the producers grabbed their ad revenue up front before reviews could sink this ship - based on the amount of ads every 7 minutes.
Terrible show but that Katie

Frank Shaffer Cocoa, Fl. (Vineyard Haven)Now I have to take all my Black Dog shirts, and Bike top and throw them away. Now the BD shirts are on the same level with "I'm with stupid" or "Old Men Rule". I called all my friends when I found out the show was on.....watched 10 min. of the show and could not call my friends back fast enough to tell them NOT to watch and apologized. Honey Bo Bo, Pro wrestling, Turtle Jumpers or what ever? God what's next? Why wasn't this show on MTV with the rest of the Brainless shows that stimulate our youth to greatness? The people of MV that allowed this "you really screwed up"; I am now back to telling people that I am from New York!
The show was very bad, but
Who Cares MVThe show was very bad, but what did you really expect? I’m guessing this type of stuff happens on TV all the time and we are oblivious to it because there a million more entertaining things to do or watch. Because it was filmed here we need to over analysis the quality of the show? Please. Two questions for the people who have posted; had you ever watched a show on ABC Family before and do you watch other shows about young 20 something’s hooking up? Shouldn’t we be more worried about people overdosing here?
It was pretty bad when I
Laura South CarolinaIt was pretty bad when I watched it. It's almost like they're trying to make it like "The Hills," but the acting is super terrible and you can definitely tell it's SUPER scripted and forced.
Was anyone really expecting
JoshWas anyone really expecting it to be good? Just check out the lineup on ABC Family, lame TV for 12 year old girls.
Sat there in disbelief with
SHOW SUCKED BIG TIME EDGARTOWNSat there in disbelief with the 'scripted' show THE VINEYARD. Words can't even describe how bad this show is. Watching scenes with no people in the background was hilarious....no people on the beaches, no people in the town?? You would have to be stupid to think this show was filmed in summer like they claim. The acting was just awful, so fake. Not seeing diversity in the cast is another thing that immediately popped out as I watched this show. They concentrate on the 'blondes'. which they probably aren't even real blondes...show the real island and that would include people of all races, Black Dog should be truly embarrassed, in fact it was laughable seeing Black Dog tees in every scene, overkill to say the least.. My son just said to me, are you still writing....just say it sucked!! OK, IT SUCKED
OH EMM GEE, I LOVE THIS SHOW!
EJ CaliforniaOH EMM GEE, I LOVE THIS SHOW!! I'M SO EXCITED TO HAVE ANOTHER HILLS TYPE SHOW TO WATCH. I LOVE THE NONSENSE AND DRAMA OF IT ALL. LIVING IN CALIFORNIA MY LIFE IS FIELD WITH DRAMA, CRAZINESS, BETRAYAL, AND ROMANCE. I THINK I NEED MY OWN REALITY SHOW. I KNOW PEOPLE WOULD LOVE TO WATCH WHAT I HAVE TO OFFER!!!
Usually I enjoy watching bad
Monica West VirginiaUsually I enjoy watching bad television on ABC Family but this was something else entirely. The characters are boring and colorless. All they want to do is tan and hook up. Those men were clearly hired for their bodies, not their acting skills...and they're not even attractive unless you're into meatheads and losers. They're whiny rich kids with boring rich kid problems. The only reason they even have jobs is so they can buy beer. None of them even have personalities. They just suck. Boring characters, horrible acting and an uninteresting plot...this show is not off to a good start. I'd rather blow my brains out than listen to those entitled idiots complain about their non-existent "issues" as if they're not just empty shells with abs. If I lived on that island, I'd move. Watching this show is like witnessing the decline of western civilization. You'd be better off watching Dance Moms because The Vineyard just took up space on my DVR. Awful show.
Disappointment. East coast
Samantha Long Beach, CADisappointment. East coast don't touch West Coast. So vapid.
Maybe because I'm a big Laguna Beach fan. LC is awesome<3
God the vineyard is horrible,
DonGod the vineyard is horrible, I tried to give it a chance but damn why are they all so bad at acting like they aren't acting...I feel stupider for viewing this junk, does the vineyard no justice
My mum and I visited the
Lisa ConnectictuMy mum and I visited the Vineyard during the filming time, and we stayed in Oak Bluffs. The other article on here about the way it was filmed was accurate: I didn't know anything was going on, and we were all over the island.
Since I fell in love with the Island after our short visit, I tried to watch an episode just so I could see it all again, but the acting/plot whatever was so......ugh. Over-privileged white kids sums it up for the most part, for most of them. Then again, I didn't like The Hills either, and this surely was no Real World. ick. No substance to it.
