President Obama and his family will return to the Vineyard for a vacation this summer, marking the fourth Summer White House trip to the Island during his presidency.

The White House confirmed last week that the Obamas will travel to the Vineyard on August 10 and remain on Island until August 18. As in the past, no public events are scheduled during their stay.

The Obamas will rent a different house this year, since Blue Heron Farm, their previous summer vacation home, was sold to new owners in 2011.

Tom Wallace, the owner of Wallace and Co. Sotheby’s International in Edgartown who has handled summer rentals for the White House in the past, had no comment on where the president and First Family will stay.

But sources told the Gazette that after a detailed exploration of several properties along the south shore from Edgartown to Chilmark, the likely location is a private home off South Road in Chilmark.

The home is owned by David Schulte, a summer resident. Built in 1961 and renovated about 10 years ago, the 5,000-square-foot contemporary-style home sits on a ridge overlooking Chilmark Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. The nine and a half acre property has access to Chilmark Pond.

The house has a private master suite with its own den, porch, outdoor shower, access to a gymnasium and his and her bathrooms. An open floor plan includes pond and ocean views from the living room, dining room and kitchen. An outside patio and screened dining room overlook an infinity pool. There are three guest bedrooms with baths. Additional amenities include a small basketball court and guest house.

The renovations to the home were designed by Rick Sundberg/Olson Kundig Architects.

The Obamas previously vacationed on the Island in August 2009, 2010 and 2011. They did not come last year, with Mr. Obama locked in a tight and heated race for reelection.

The south shore has long been a preferred location for presidential retreats for security reasons. President Clinton and his family stayed at a private compound on the south shore in Edgartown.

Preparations are underway across the Island to ready electrical and communication systems for the president’s arrival. Additional cell phone towers have been installed around the Chilmark property where the family will stay. Chilmark executive secretary Tim Carroll said two Verizon cell on wheels mobile sites, or “cows,” are expected to arrive in Chilmark during the president’s stay.

Secret Service members are also involved in advance preparations at the Snail Road property and nearby locations.

Peter Martell, owner of the Wesley Hotel in Oak Bluffs, said he has 70 rooms booked for Secret Service members and five reserved for the Transportation Security Agency (TSA).

“We’ve never had a problem with these guys, they’re really good,” Mr. Martell said. “They’re respectful.”

Martha’s Vineyard Airport manager Sean Flynn said he has not received confirmation from the White House about the president’s trip. But based on the family’s last visit, a 30-mile flight restriction will be put in place, Mr. Flynn said. In the past he has worked with the necessary agencies to coordinate a plan that allows planes to continue to fly in and out of the airport with few interruptions.

“We try to improve on it every time,” Mr. Flynn said.

Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s visit is scheduled for one of the busiest weeks of the year on the Island. The 152nd Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair begins August 15 and runs though August 18. Grand Illumination Night at the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association will take place on August 14 and the Oak Bluffs fireworks show is scheduled for August 16.

During past visits Islanders havewelcomed the Obamas by lining the airport road for their arrival and departure, holding signs and waving flags.

The Obamas typically spend their vacation time quietly, with the president playing golf, sometimes more than once a day, and by going on family outings alone and with friends.

Their close friends include senior advisor Valerie Jarrett and Prof. Charles Ogletree, Mr. Obama’s former mentor at Harvard law school and a regular golfing partner. Both Mr. Ogletree and Ms. Jarrett are longtime summer residents of Oak Bluffs.

Mr. Obama’s visits to the Vineyard date to a time before he became the first African American president of the U.S.

In 2004 he spoke as a fresh, young voice of the Democratic party and a senatorial candidate from Illinois at a forum on race relations at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. The annual W.E.B. DuBois Institute forum marked the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on Brown vs. Board of Education.

“Where do we go from here,” he asked. “If we deal with race in isolation, to the exclusion of jobs or the health crisis, we’ll lose. We need to break out of the either/or mentality.”

Mr. Obama returned to the Island in 2007 as a Democratic presidential candidate, along with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

At a fundraising event that summer, Mr. Obama spoke about why he liked the Vineyard.

“I can wander around in shorts and not shave in the morning and no one talks about it,” he said.

How long before the first person who criticizes Obama gets a response from some liberal comparing his vacation schedule to that of Bush? Why is it that these people think that just because someone dislikes Obama it means they must love Bush? So here we go, all presidents, just like the rest of the country, are entitled to vacation whenever and wherever they choose, they deserve it. That said, this particular President and his policies are destroying our American way of life. He and his lackeys are bent on turning our country into a socialist nanny state where everyone is dependent on the government for their well being. Gone will be the days when you work hard, take risks and your success or failure is totally up to you and your ability to make things happen. Government is here to support us, not to dominate and control us.

Laura Oak Bluffs

Ahh lets see Bob..I wonder if this vacation will be another ONE MILLION DOLLAR one..the idiot. Someday I;m going to turn on my TV and see Hail..Hitler..we are already into socialism

Bill H Dallas

RE "another ONE MILLION DOLLAR one": I am certain more than one person wants to kill an American president, with Ford and Reagan being the latest to have felt it. The Secret Service does its job and it does cost us all, no matter what party's president is in power. I didn't vote for Reagan or Ford, and I won't complain about their vacation costs, either. Still, in this country a CEO can make tens of millions of dollars, while his employees get no health care, and yet that is thought to be capitalism (including those who support, through advertising, the TV channels I assume you watch). RE "Hail [sic] Hitler": Hitler imposed a policy of National Socialism, otherwise known as Fascism, and typically characterized as being "right wing". He established a one-party system by killing off those who opposed his policies, and he exterminated those who looked or behaved contrary to what he thought was the "ideal human". He practiced genocide on Jews, gypsies, gays, _socialists_, communists, the mentally sick, and others. By your simply suggesting Obama is "like Hitler" I think you are insulting all those who had died at the hands of Hitler, which includes American servicemen. You need to think about what Hitler did, every time you vote.

Bill H Dallas

RE "Why is it that these people think": Reading the minds of 'straw men' is not impressive. I don't claim to know what conservatives "think", I simply read what they say. Along those lines, RE "this particular President and his policies are destroying our American way of life" and "turning our country into a socialist nanny state": How so? Do you mean Obamacare? Do you think "our American way of life" is to _not_ buy health insurance, to _shirk_ on our health care bills, and to _shift_ costs upon those who _do_ pay? Personally, I want the government to ensure I _don't_ pay for slackers, and that includes _businesses_ that do _not_ take care of their employees. In that light, I don't think Obamacare went far enough. As far a "socialism" is concerned, I think Obama has been, and always will be, a centrist. The problem I have with Obama is his tacitly allowing businesses "to dominate and control us". If we were all rugged individualists (an admirable trait), there would be no such businesses. And yet every time I pass a McDonalds I think of its employees whose health care both you and I subsidize (so that we all can buy a cheap burger). Is McDonalds a socialist or a capitalist?

How utterly hysterical that Obama decides to vacation in Chilmark, the one Island town that declared houses the size of the one he is staying in, obscene. I am falling off my chair laughing at the irony.

The president wants all us US to play fair, wants US to redistribute wealth, yet HE vacations like a king.

Will the town members who feel big these big houses and their off-island owners are evil, that they suck the air out of the town, and drain resources, go out and protest that the president and his giant entourage bring even MORE pollution - more cars, more phone devices? I bet not.

Bill H Dallas

RE "wants US to redistribute wealth": So, every time you support a business that does _not_ cover their employee's healthcare costs, exactly whose wealth do you think is being redistributed? Personally, I don't enjoy eating off the backs of those less fortunate than me. And why is that farms get price guarantees while other businesses (such as mines) do not? Of course, U.S. mines get land for a pittance, but that is a redistribution horse of a different color, isn't it? RE "HE vacations like a king": I think he vacations just like a President (with Secret Service guarding him), just the way other presidents have done. RE "Will the town members [] protest that the president and his giant entourage bring even MORE pollution - more cars, more phone devices?": I fail to understand your "logic" - I do not believe Chilmark residents appreciate being called hypocrites (especially when it concerns their _votes_), and Obama is not _building_ a home.

I'd tell him to stay home and save his money, but it's the tax payers money he's spending. It's hard to have a battle of the minds with liberals and dems, they lack the key element needed. THE MIND.

President Obama, your welcomed at my place. I will thank you for not allow insurance companies to drop me after cancer, for getting us out of manufactured wars, for cracking down on coal, for expanding fundemental rights, for championing immigration reform, gun control and now action to address climate change. I'd say you need a vacation and I am happy you treasure our special island.

It's pretty neat that the President of the United States who could choose anywhere in the world to vacation enjoys Martha's Vineyard enough to come here again. It also seems to be great for the local economy and keeps MV ever present as a top vacation spot.
You can like or dislike the politics of the POTUS, but the office deserves the respect of every American citizen.

Caroline New York

Ken, Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you 100%, that the office of the president deserves respect. I am patriotic, civic minded, respectful, and I value our democracy. However, at no time has the president respected me. He's made a mockery of the values I hold near and dear, he's taken sides on issues that he shouldn't, and he has laughed in the face of the IRS and Benghazi scandals.

Ken, The Vineyard is a beautiful place and I hope that your economy fares well because of his visit, but I can not, and will not ever respect a man who let the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi go without review. Respect is a two way street.

Caroline,
No, you either respect the office of the President or you don't. President Obama won the election for a second time, and did so by a pretty convincing majority. That doesn't mean you have to agree with his programs or politics, but the office of this country's highest elected official deserves respect. For the record, I don't agree with the President's policies on many issues.

However, the same types of claims that you have made and some far worse can be made of a great many former Presidents. How many people did George W. Bush cause to die because of the false claims about WMD or not heeding the warnings about 9/11? How about Clinton's failings?, Bush, Sr. and arming Iraq with weapons they later used to kill? Reagan and Iran Contra, Nixon? Kennedy and LBJ in VN, C'mon. What about Tea Pot Dome? We had almost 100 years of Presidents while slavery, child labor and sweatshops were still legal in the United States. Were all of those okay in your eyes?

No, you don't like this President for whatever reason, but are going to expect others to respect the office when someone you like is elected.

This is not a political visit, it's a vacation and the President of the United States chose Martha's Vineyard for that trip. That's a good thing. There's plenty of time and plenty of places to let your political views be known. Why not save it for those venues?

Reading the "Comments" section of the Gazette can often be informative and bring other, well-reasoned points of view to light. Mention the Obamas, and people crawl out of the woodwork like mad dogs.

Some of the above comments (hello Bob, Laura and Caroline) are so hateful and ignorant of history and politics (not to mention spelling errors), they only serve to remind us that the sorry state of affairs is here on the island as well. Please, try not to further embarrass ALL of Martha's Vineyard.

It's a Presidential family vacation. The Obamas like the Vineyard. Get over it.
