Police are investigating a head-on collision on Beach Road in Oak Bluffs that caused major traffic diversions but no injuries.

Oak Bluffs police Lt. Timothy Williamson said a Chevy sedan crossed the center line and hit a taxi van head-on in front of the restaurant Hooked. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. The taxi was not carrying passengers.

Lt. Williamson said police are investigating whether the driver of the sedan “may have been impaired.”

“The early indication is that it looks like the operator crossed the center line into oncoming traffic,” he said.

Lt. Williamson said police are also looking into whether the driver of the sedan sideswiped a car in the Cow Bay area of Beach Road in Edgartown.

Beach Road was closed from the Triangle in Edgartown to Oak Bluffs in order to clear debris, Lt. Williamson said. Edgartown police chief Antone Bettencourt diverted the bumper-to-bumper July 4 traffic to Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

The road remained closed for about an hour; it has since been reopened.

[email protected] Beach Road Near Cow Bay

This driver swerved into a parked car along Beach Road and almost hit a child. There were no skid marks as he didn't even brake before or after the damage was done. Thank goodness the police quickly apprehended this menace before there was loss of life.

Stillirritated Oak Bluffs

This may also have been the same car which swerved more than 4 feet over the centerline, farther back near the Scottish Bakehouse area, driving myself and the car ahead towards the shoulder to avoid a certain head-on collision. Without instantaneous reactions on both our parts, the outcome would have been very different. All of us should get together to testify in court , hoping to keep this menace off the road.

Outstraightener OB

This accident happened no where near the Scottish Bakehouse nor were the other vehicles hit anywhere near there. Maybe you should spend a week or two listening to the number of eratic operators called in on the scanner via the cell phone patrol units. Charge someone for what can be proven but not for wild speculations.
