Jury selection began today in Dukes County Superior Court for the murder trial of an Aquinnah man.
Ovando Eghill, 32, is charged with second degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly fatally stabbed an Edgartown man, Michael M. Trusty, on June 14, 2011.
According to police, the incident took place outside a Spring street home in Vineyard Haven. Mr. Eghill’s wife was previously married to Mr. Trusty, and both men were at Spring street to visit their children, police said.
The two allegedly became involved in a confrontation, and a police report said that Mr. Trusty held a machete over Mr. Eghill’s head and attempted to strike him. Police said Mr. Eghill blocked the attempt and then allegedly stabbed Mr. Trusty with a work knife from the waistband of his pants.
Mr. Eghill’s attorney, Robert Jubinville, said at the time that his client acted in self-defense.
Mr. Trusty, 45, later died at a Boston hospital. In October 2011, Mr. Eghill was indicted by a grand jury and arraigned in Superior Court; he has been free on $10,000 bail since that time.
Cape and Islands first assistant district attorney Michael Trudeau and assistant district attorney Laura Marshard are representing the commonwealth. Superior Court Judge Hon. Gary A. Nickerson is presiding.

I know nothing of this story
JeffI know nothing of this story other than what is printed in this article, but if Mr Trusty was indeed threatening Mr. Eghill with a machete, than Mr. Eghil had every right to stab him. If those are the facts, then I hope the jury finds him not guilty.
i understand on what you are
tammy mrtha's vineyardi understand on what you are saying.he stabbed him 5 times and then he tosed the knife that he used into the brushs and he fled from the sceene if he was doing in self defense then he would have stayed there to talk to the police and kept the knife that he used.it took him 5 hours for him to turn himself in.i hope that justice is served where it is needed...
Nobody gets convicted on
CuriousNobody gets convicted on "police report said."
The police were not there when it happened. Their report has to be based on statements taken. Were there witnesses?
Not much info here.
