Vineyard Peewees Storm Nantucket for Youth Hockey Title

The Martha’s Vineyard Peewees upended the undefeated Nantucket Nor’easters on Saturday to earn the title of Cape and Island League Champions in their final game of the hockey season. The game was played at Charles Moore Arena in Orleans. The final score was 5 to 3.

After a rousing pregame speech by team captain Jack Murray, the Peewees came out strong at the start of the match, scoring twice in the first minute. The team potted a third goal before the first period was over, but Nantucket took advantage of power plays in the second period to tie the game.

A cheering crowd helped rally the Vineyard in the third period as the strong team defense and goaltending held off Nantucket. The offense dug in as well, with the Vineyard scoring two more goals in the period, standing tough even when Nantucket pulled their goalie in the final minute in an attempt to hold onto the championship title.

The Peewees prepared for their high-stakes match two weeks ago when the team traveled to the annual Can/Am Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y., playing teams from Vermont, Pennsylvania and Canada.

The team is coached by Tim Bettencourt with help from assistants Bobby Sprague, Nelson Dickson and Brandon Willett.
