A 30-year-old Vineyard Haven man has been cited for leaving the scene of property/damage after crashing his car through a guardrail on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road last week and abandoning it in a ravine.

Tisbury acting sergeant Chris Habekost said that on Saturday morning an older model Land Rover SUV broke through the guardrail that edges the bike path on the main road, just past the Canterbury Road turnoff, and landed in the adjacent ravine. The department learned of the crash during the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. When the car was found, it was unoccupied and up against a tree in the ravine, showing “significant damage,” Sgt. Habekost said.

Police later identified Erik Kelly as the operator of the vehicle and cited him for the incident, said Tisbury Sgt. Timothy Stobie. According to Sergeant Stobie, Mr. Kelly told police a deer had run in front of his car.
