In 2001, Oak Bluffs harbor master Todd Alexander and his wife, Kara Gelinas, were on vacation in Southeast Asia when they met Roma, a 14-year-old girl who was selling water and souvenirs during the day instead of going to school.

Roma had no official schooling. Her family could not afford it.

Introduction to Spinning

Introductory classes to spinning with Anna Marie D’Addarie are being offered at the store at the Island Alpaca Farm, Oak Bluffs.

All ages are welcomed. Materials and practice wheels are provided.

The class price is $125. Each class consists of two sessions for a total of eight hours. Wheel rentals are available for use after class for two weeks for an additional $50. A $25 credit can be applied towards any wheel purchase at the end of rental period.

Artists in Residence

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School will host an informational gathering on Monday, Feb. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. for people interested in sharing their skills and talents in the school’s Artists in Residence program.

Autism Support Group

A support group is forming for families with children on the autism spectrum. The group will provide a place for conversation and sharing of resources and experiences in navigating the autism spectrum.

The first meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark library. More information is available by calling 508-645-3245 or 508-645-8002.

Lap Puppets

April Thanhauser of Spindrift Marionettes will join the staff of Plum Hill School to offer a free morning of puppets and crafts tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Family Center at the high school.

April’s puppet show will feature colorful “lap puppets” enacting a medley of nursery rhymes ­— just right for toddlers and preschoolers.

Stephanie DaRosa and Josie Black of Plum Hill will follow with a natural craft activity for parents and children to do together.

English Conversation

The Edgartown library has begun a winter semester of free English conversation classes, led by Nancy Gardella. The class meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at Edgartown town hall. Class dates are Jan. 29; Feb. 5, 12 and 19; and March 4, 11 and 18.
