On Tuesday, August 12, and Saturday, August 16, the Polly Hill Arboretum will offer two tours highlighting native trees and plants. On August 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. join Karin Stanley, arboretum staff member and amateur historian, for a tour of native trees and shrubs on the grounds. Knowing the cultural history of these plants gives them an identity that distinguishes them from “just part of the woods.” Learn the wide range of uses these plants have had over the years and how this reflects the history of the human societies that have used them.
Library Campaign News
On Thursday, August 14, Friends of the Edgartown Library will host an open house at the library to provide a summer update to the public about the library’s current capital campaign. A brief talk with a follow-up question and answer period will be held at 7 p.m.
The Friends of the Edgartown Library also will meet on August 28 at 10 a.m. at the library. All are welcome.
Political commentator, George Mason University professor and author Michael Fauntroy will discuss his book, Republicans and the Black Vote, a historical look at the GOP and black voters, on Thursday, August 14, at 5 p.m. as part of the Chilmark Free Public Library adult evening series. The free talk is open to the public, hosted by the library and Friends of the Library. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
Learn ABCs of Travel
At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12, Jeanne and Malcolm Campbell present a free slide-show of their travels from Alaska to the Baltic. This program is an ABC guide to seeing the world in the air-conditioned Featherstone Center for the Arts.
The Campbells travel widely and are generous supporters of Vineyard causes, from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and the Yard to Camp Jabberwocky and Featherstone.

Island Grown Initiative invites all Island educators to a three-day workshop on how to incorporate curriculum-tied farm- and school-garden based programs into their classes.
The Institute will run from August 11 to 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee for Vineyard teachers, and 20 PDPs will be awarded.
Participants will:
• Develop project ideas on food and agriculture topics that promote service learning and link to the academic curriculum;
• Receive a set of practical, engaging lesson plans generated during the workshop;
Lama Yeshe Drolma has returned for her eighth year of teaching at The Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in West Tisbury to give a series of teachings in August and September.
Beginning Sunday, August 10 at 10 a.m. running through Sunday, Sept. 28, Lama Yeshe will teach on the topic Samsara and Nivana, explaining the significance of these Buddhist terms which describe the state of all sentient beings trapped in suffering and the path beyond it.
