The Cleaveland House Poetry Group was founded over 40 years ago by Dionis Coffin Riggs, its name arising from her house in West Tisbury where the meetings are held. It is the longest running writers group on Martha’s Vineyard, hosting bi-weekly meetings, year-round. Today Dionis’ daughter, Cynthia Riggs, presides over the group, and the meetings are still held at the same location.
The American Academy of Arts and Letters was established in 1898. There are 250 members in the organization, never more or less. To be inducted into the Academy, one of its members must die. In other words, it is very selective. It is also rather mind-boggling to think of the backlog of talent to choose from when an opening does arise.
The Library Friends of Oak Bluffs is holding a book drive on April 6 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The Friends are looking for used books for children, teens and adults, including hardcover and paperback, fiction and nonfiction. They are also accepting DVDs, CDs, Audio Books on CD, and recent textbooks (last three years only).
The little boy on the garden gate
Sings and swings.
He dreameth not of the march of fate,
How the hours will glide, and the heart must wait
For the prize to which it clings.
long long long legs
pink pulsating noses
smooth hooves smelling of sweetness
they were the embodiment
of beauty in life
