School Book Fair
The Tisbury school library is getting set to hold its annual book fair beginning Nov. 28 and running through Dec. 1.
The theme of the fair this year is The Book Fair And Beyond! Books will be available for all ages, including adults. It is the perfect opportunity for everyone to add to their libraries and give the gift of reading.
Funds from the book fair help purchase print, audio and video resources that support the curriculum frameworks of the library and augment the reading interests of students.
Lion King Roars for Free
For those stuck on the Vineyard this weekend, instead of making their way to Nantucket to watch The Game, there is a small bit of solace. On Saturday, The Lion King roars for free at the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven.
Don’t think a Disney animated movie is a rival substitute for gridiron excitement? Well, at least it can get the kids out of the house while you snuggle your ear up to the radio and listen to the live action (that you are missing) beam in from across the Sound.
Vineyard artist Wendy Weldon is holding an open house at her art studio in Chilmark over Thanksgiving weekend. Her work includes paintings, monotypes and drawings both on canvas and paper.
In her latest artist statement she says, “My latest work expresses my return to more abstracted imagery. I have spent many years moving away from the abstract to the more objective.”
Holiday Gift Show
Got those Black Friday blues? Never fear, there’s no reason to go off-Island and get involved in that mad commercial scramble. But no need to sit home giftless with a long list to fill, either.
Today, Nov. 18, Featherstone in Oak Bluffs opens up its annual holiday gift show. The event takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and then continues throughout the weekend from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Strong characters with Russian accents, a story line set in an era unfamiliar to teenagers, an elaborate set design with complicated lighting cues and music that covers the waterfront — it’s no wonder the high school drama department started work on this play last spring.
But they did and the hard work was evident at Chess the Musical, which opened last night at the high school Performing Arts Center and shows again tonight and on Sunday this weekend.
